Domaine Ghislaine BARTHOD (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2018 Tasted from Barrel

(Please read my general assessment of the 2018 vintage in the Côte d’ Or here.)

As I mentioned in my notes on Domaine Louis Boillot & Fils, son Clément worked with Ghislaine for the 2018 vintage and has taken over as of the 2019 vintage.

Harvesting here began on 26 August. Yields were in the range of 30-35 hl/ha, about 25-30% less than in 2017. Malo-lactic fermentations finished in January and February.

As always, splendid wines here. The range of premiers crus has increased to eleven.

Domaine Ghislaine BARTHOD (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2016 Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published January 2018)

Harvesting here began on 24 September. What little there was from the Combottes and Châtelots vineyards was declassified to the village Chambolle. For the rest, the harvest is down 50-60% from a normal vintage.

As usual, all grapes were destemmed. There was no chaptalization here, with the grapes being picked at 12.5-13.3º natural alcohol. Malolactic fermentations finished in March and April.  (Continue reading here.)

Domaine Ghislaine BARTHOD (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2017 Tasted from Barrel

I get e-mails from people asking me for advance disclosures of my reviews on Ghislaine Barthod’s wines. All I can say as that this is one estate where the wines are always good and you can buy blind without concern.

In 2017, there are two new premier cru bottlings, Noirots and Sentiers. Both are from vines that are 65-70 years old and available only in tiny quantities. Previously, the grapes had gone into the village Chambolle-Musigny bottling.

After excellent regional and village wines, one then works one’s way through eleven premiers crus Chambolle-Musignys, starting at very good premier cru quality and gradually passing to grand cru quality. Not a step has been missed. (Continue reading here.)
