Domaine Ghislaine BARTHOD (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2016 Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published January 2018)

Harvesting here began on 24 September. What little there was from the Combottes and Châtelots vineyards was declassified to the village Chambolle. For the rest, the harvest is down 50-60% from a normal vintage.

As usual, all grapes were destemmed. There was no chaptalization here, with the grapes being picked at 12.5-13.3º natural alcohol. Malolactic fermentations finished in March and April.

2016 Bourgogne   Les Bons Bâtons    Pinot Noir
It comes as no surprise that this wine is one of the finest Bourgognes around. The wine is dense and pure with red fruits and elegance, but also power.  (88-91)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny
This wine shows mineral red fruits, good density, concentration, freshness, length, juiciness, energy, and some tannins. As I indicated above, the wine includes what little was harvested from the premier cru Combottes and Châtelots vineyards. (89-93)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Beaux Bruns
With the Beaux Bruns, there is a substantial increase in quality. The nose shows strawberries and some spice and it is pure, elegant, and juicy. The mouth shows more finesse than the Bourgogne and the village wine with strawberry and red cherry fruit and a silky texture. (91-94)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Baudes
The Baudes has wild strawberry fruit, minerality, roundness, length, and salinity. (91-94)

2016 Chambolle-Muisgny    1er Cru   Les Charmes
Barthod’s Charmes is almost opulent in its red fruits. It also has concentration, purity, and silkiness. (92-96)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Gruenchers
Barthod has but a single barrel of Gruenchers in 2016; initially, it was a new barrel, and on racking, the wine went into a two-year old barrel. The wine shows strawberry, cherry, and red currant fruit, and it is light on the palate with purity, great finesse; overall it is ethereal. (92-95)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Fuées
The Fuées is saline and fairly powerful, but also with finesse. The wine has good length, density, and intensity. (92-95)

2016 Chambolle-Musingy    1er Cru   Les Véroilles
Located just above Bonnes-Mares, and the only premier cru portion of this climat (the rest are village), the Véroilles is ethereal, pure, light, and intense with long red fruits and some dark ones, plus excellent depth. (92-95)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny   1er Cru   Les Cras
Last and deservingly so, is the Cras. The wine has floral red cherry and strawberry aromas. The mouth is pure, dense, and balanced with intensity, some power, salinity, and it has some black licorice to round out the red fruits. It is a complete wine. (93-96)
