Maison MARCHAND-TAWSE -- 2018 Reds Tasted from Barrel

Please see my overview of the 2018 vintage here and my notes on the 2018 Domaine Tawse wines here

As with the Domaine Tawse wines, there are some very ripe wines here that will not please lovers of classic Burgundy style.

2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges
2/3 from Vosne side — Charmots, Lavières, Herbues. Vosne-like spices in nose. Smooth not so very high in ripeness. Good tannins. (89-91)

2018 Vosne-Romanée
Reduction in nose. From Aux Réas, Vigneux, Hautes-Maizières. Red and dark fruits, good firmness and freshness, smooth. (90-92)

2018 Chambolle-Musigny
Big but not overwhelming; red fruits, ripe but not overripe. Good tannic structure. (89-91)

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin
Red fruits, not ovrerripe, but is ripe, good energy, some wildness. (89-91)

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin   En Pallud (bought wine from Bertrand Maume  — labelled as Marchand-Tawse, made by Bertrand Maume)
Crisp dark fruits, medium-weight, good freshness, round tannins. All destemmed. Only a village wine, but for me, the best and most classic of this line up. (91-94)

2018 Morey-St-Denis   Rue de Vergey
30% whole clusters. Ripe, especially for location. Not undrinkably overripe, but just barely. Enough acidity, some freshness, dark fruits. Smooth, velvety texture. (87-89)

2018 Vosne-Romanée  1er Cru  Les Suchots
100% whole cluster. Old vines at top of Suchots. 15% alcohol, spirity in nose; in mouth, rich, ripe, but not jammy, not hot. More like a Rhône than Burgundy (86-88)

2018 Morey-St-Denis  1er Cru  Clos des Ormes
Around 14% alcohol. Ripe, red fruits, some tannins, some finesse. (88-90)

2018 Morey-St-Denis   1er Cru  Les Millandes
Dense, very ripe, power for Millandes, chewy. (87-89)

2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges  1er Cru  Les Corvées Pagets
(Usually quite a bit of whole bunch, but destemmed in 2018.) Dark fruits, concentrated, intense, ripe. (88-90)

2018 Pommard   1er Cru  Les Rugiens
Only 1 barrel, which is new. From upper part of vineyard. A big enough wine to eat the oak; dark syrupy fruits, good nervosity for vintage, some Rugiens smokiness. Unusual, but not unpleasant. (89-91)

2018 Corton
All from Rognet vineyard. Crushed dark fruits, a bit salinity. Fairly big but with some finesse. (90-93)

2018 Echézeaux
Dark fruits, deep, ripe, intense, tannic. Will need time. (89-92)

2018 Clos Saint-Denis
20% whole cluster, 50% new oak. Very fine, ripe but not overripe, dark fruits, not as big as most of the above wines. (91-94)

2018 Clos de la Roche
20% whole cluster. Dark fruits, good energy, fairly ripe. (91-93)

2018 Charmes-Chambertin
Very old vines. Dense, deep, ripe, some purity; dark fruits. (91-93)
