Jacques-Frédéric MUGNIER (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2016 Tasted from Bottle

My comments on tasting these wines from barrel in fall 2017 are here.

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru   Clos de la Maréchale  blanc
This wine shows quince aromas and flavors. The mouth is smooth, long and pure. There’s good energy and depth here, but still a bit more in the 2017 version of this wine. Good ripeness and acidity. Fred Mugnier notes that there is extraordinary aging potential for the white Clos de la Maréchale.  92+/A

2016 Chambolle-Musigny   "32"
This wine bears the designation “32" because it is not the same assemblage as usual for Mugnier’s Chambolle-Musigny. The Combe d’Orveaux and Les Plantes vineyards, which normally make up the village Chambolle suffered losses of 1/2 to 2/3 from the frost, so there is a lot (about 1/4 of the blend) of Musigny in this wine, from a portion of that vineyard which suffered more than others from the frost, and there’s also a fair amount of second generation grapes here. The wine is dense and spicy with dark fruits and very good length — very different character from the usual village Chambolle here. There’s smoothness and power here — the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove — presumably coming from the Musigny.  91(+)/A

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Fuées
This wine is crisp, pure, deep, dense, lively, and energetic. But it needs plenty of time to come together. It features mineral blueberry fruit and somewhat surprisingly shows more finesse than the previous wine. 94/A

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru   Clos de la Maréchale  rouge
The red Nuits-Clos de la Maréchale is very dense and concentrated with a smooth texture and pure blueberry fruit. But there are tannins here beneath the great depth of this wine. I’d plan on a minimum of 15 years of cellaring. 94/A

2016 Bonnes-Mares
My question mark is due to some meatiness in the nose. Otherwise, this wine is sensational with red and dark fruits, power and finesse, and lightness on the palate. Like the Clos de la Maréchale, this wine needs substantial aging to reach its full potential — I’d estimate 18 years, perhaps even more. 96?/A

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Amoureuses
The Amoureuses has spice red cherry and red currant aromas. The question mark here is due to a hard shell that surrounds the wine in the mouth, most unusual for Amoureuses. But the wine is dense and very focused with red fruit flavors. For the moment, the vintage’s sternness is overwhelming the Amoureuses sensuality, but one can see that the potential is there and the patient should be rewarded. 95?/A

2016 Musigny
The Musigny has a nose that is spicy and pure with dark fruits. The mouth shows lightness on the palate and purity with dark fruits and length. In recent years, Mugnier has been holding the Musigny back so that consumers don’t drink it too young. Fred said that he is thinking of releasing the 2013 in 2020, by which time it will have had five years in the bottle. 97/A+
