Domaine Louis BOILLOT et Fils (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2016 Part II: Côte de Nuits Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published January 2018)

Background on the harvest at Boillot is here.

This remarkable selection of wines shows wines potentially at the level of the an appellation above; that is, the Bourgogne at the level of a good village wine, the village wines at the level of good premiers crus, and the premiers crus at the level of grands crus. With high prices due to low stocks and high demand for Burgundy, it is wines such as this that most Burgundy fans need to focus on.

2016 Bourgogne    Pinot Noir
This delicious wine has floral aromas, red fruit flavors and freshness. (88-91)

2016 Côte de Nuits-Villages
The Côte de Nuits-Villages  has perfumed dark fruit aromas. The mouth shows red fruits, minerality, freshness, and silkiness. (89-92)

2016 Fixin
The Fixin is mineral with a bit of black licorice, freshness, purity, and silkiness. It is from 60 year-old vines just below the wall of the premier cru Clos du Chapître. (89-92)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny
Boillot’s Chambolle is from the village portion of the Beaux Bruns vineyard. The wine is dense and pure with dark fruits, a cool texture, and a suggestion of chewiness. (90-94)

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin
The Gevrey is from eight different parcels in the appellation. The nose is floral. The mouth shows wild red and dark fruits typical of Gevrey, and the wine has good structure and length to go with a smooth texture. (90-93)

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin    Les Evocelles
Evocelles generally is recognized as a lieu-dit that deserves premier cru status. At any rate, Boillot’s Evocelles is regularly of premier cru quality, and that certainly is the case here. The wine is light on the palate with dark berry fruit, some salinity, and finesse. The vines here average about 60 years in age. (91-94)

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru    Les Champonnets
The Champonnets features floral and red and dark fruit aromas. The mouth is round and chewy with deep dark berry fruits, and great depth, density, and intensity. Yet the wine also has the elegance of the vintage. The vines here are 45 years-old and Louis says that he sees the grapes becoming smaller, and the wine better, with each vintage. (92-96)

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru   Les Cherbaudes
The Cherbaudes is from vines planted in 1912. The wild strawberry aromas are followed in the mouth by wild strawberry and other red fruit syrups (I do not use this in an overripe sense), sweetness from the fruits, density, sensuality, purity, length, silkiness, and finesse.  (92-96)

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru   Les Pruliers
The Pruners is from vines a generation or more younger than the Cherbaudes, but still venerable at more than 80 years-old. The wine has floral blueberry aromas. The mouth shows crystalline blueberry fruit with finesse, density, and the structure of the southern slope of Nuits. (92-96)
