Domaine Louis BOILLOT et Fils (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2016 Part I: Côte de Beaune Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published January 2018)

Louis Boillot has much of his vineyards located in the areas most affected by the frost — especially village Volnay, Pommard, and Beaune; Nuits-Pruliers; Gevrey-Chambertin; Volnay-Champans; and Volnay-Caillerets with overall losses of 70-80% from a normal vintage. The wine that was made is worthy of your serious interest.

Harvesting began around 19 or 20 September. As always, grapes were entirely destemmed. Malolactic fermentations were early, with many finishing by Christmas, others in March.

Louis is looking to March and April 2018 for bottling.

All these wines are of very good quality, but pay attention to the village wines, which are almost at the same level as the premiers crus.

2016 Pommard
Here the fruit is dark, fresh, and pure, and the texture is silky. The vines here are about thirty years old. (90-93)

2016 Beaune    Epenottes
Boillot’s Beaune, Epenottes  has floral aromas. The mouth is medium-weight and concentrated with dense red fruits, length, and good finesse for this vineyard. The vines here are about seventy years old. (90-93)

2016 Volnay    Les Grands Poisots
The nose of the Volnay, Grands Poisots shows red fruits. The mouth continues with strawberries, freshness, purity, and precision. A normal year from this vineyard would produce sixteen barrels of wine (4800 bottles), but this vintage produced only four (1200 bottles). (90-93)

2016 Volnay    1er Cru   Les Angles
The nose of the Volnay-Angles is floral. The mouth is round with fresh, spicy red fruits and the wine has good concentration. Here there was no frost and so almost a normal harvest. (91-94)

2016 Volnay   1er Cru  Les Brouillards
Wild strawberries in the nose and mouth along with a silky texture. The wine has length, finesse, and freshness. 60% loss due to frost here. (91-94)

2016 Volnay     1er Cru   Les Caillerets
The nose of the Caillerets is floral. The mouth has the Caillerets smooth texture with somewhat darker fruit than the Brouillards, and good length and finesse. Half the vines here are 60 years old, half are three years old. Total harvest was only 1/4 of a normal year. (92-95)

2016 Pommard    1er Cru   Les Frémiers
The Frémiers displays ripe red fruit aromas and flavors. The wine shows more density and power than the Volnays but still with finesse. Good length here. Usually, Boillot produces at least four barrels of this wine; in 2016 there is but a single barrel.  (91-94)

2016 Pommard   1er Cru   Les Croix Noires
The Croix Noires is on red clay soils and consistently comes in at 1º less alcohol than the other wines. It features saline red fruits with floral elements. The wine is concentrated, deep, and intense. Only a single barrel of this wine.  (91-95)
