A fair portion of the red wines that I taste from these two regions in Southeastern Austria have too much new oak for my taste, but I found these four wines to be of interest.

BURGENLAND

MORIC

2020 Blau Fränkisch

This is a refreshing wine with a fair amount of power and excellent red and black raspberry fruit plus good underlying acidity. It is an enjoyable wine for drinking now with strong-flavored dishes, but there’s also the balance to provide aging potential. DIAM 10 closure. 12.5% stated alcohol. S.P.Nr.: L-N 21783/21.  90/A

CARNUNTUM

ARTNER

2019 Carnutum   Zweigelt   Ried Steinacker  1ÖTW

This wine is medium-weight with a smooth texture, a round, medium-weight body, and dark fruits that are without the precision to permit this wine to move into the upper echelon. Nice overall finesse. Cork closure. 13.5% stated alcohol. Lot LN 1 4061/21. 88/B

Franz und Christine NETZL

2019 Carnuntum Zweigelt Ried Bärnreiser “Anna-Christina” 1ÖTW

Dark fruit, some oak but not overwhelming; smooth texture, some layering, good depth, juicy quality to the fruit. 18 months in oak (half new), four weeks maceration. Nice finesse, a bit of salinity. 70% Zweigelt, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 90/A-

PAYR

2019 Höflein Carnuntum   Zweigelt  Ried Steinacker  1 ÖTW

This wine only started to show its stuff on the third day after opening, so either decant well in advance of serving or plan on holding this wine for 8-10 years or more. The wine is medium-light in weight with a silk texture. It has some spicy herbs along with dark fruits, largely plums. Cork closure. 13.5% stated alcohol. Lot LM 19490/21. 91/A
