2020 Rheinhessen Grosses Gewächs Riesling Part II (Aulerde, Brunnenäschen, Frauenfeld, Kirchspeil, La Borne, Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück, Morstein from Battenfeld-Spanier, Groebe, Gutzler, Wittmann)

Who would have thought 25 years ago that many of the world’s greatest dry white wines would come from the Wonnegau? I discovered them about 15+ years ago, but they are still relatively unknown and thus undervalued in the marketplace.

BATTENFELD-SPANIER

2020 (Nieder-Flörsheim) Frauenfeld Riesling GG

Mineral, penetrating, limestone dust, length, salinity. 94(+)/A

K. F. GROEBE

2020 (Westhofen) Aulerde Riesling GG

Pure, mineral, medium-weight, nervy, lime, depth, penetration. 94/A

2020 (Westhofen) Kirchspiel Riesling GG

Dusty, stony nose. Medium weight with some sensuality, clarity, purity, minerality. 95(+)/A+

GUTZLER

2020 (Westhofen) Morstein Riesling GG

Clear, medium-weight, a touch rustic, lime minerality. 90/B+

2020 (Worms) Liebfrauenstift-Kirchenstück Riesling GG

Mineral nose and mouth, light body. Good acidity. An elegant wine with penetration. 93/A

WITTMANN

2020 (Westhofen) Aulerde Riesling GG

Pure, mineral, medium-weight, lime, perhaps a bit rounder than the Groebe Aulerde. 95/A+

2020 (Westhofen) Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG

Pure, clear, penetrating, precise, mineral Riesling with very good acidity. 95/A+

2020 (Westhofen) Kirchspiel Riesling GG

A bit rounder than Groebe’s Kirchspiel, mineral, penetrating, pure, precise. So good! — no, better than "so good!”. 95(+)/A+

2020 (Westhofen) La Borne Riesling GG alte Reben (auction)

From vines that are about 50 years old and at 1400 meters altitude. Light, elegant, pure, fragrant, and long. Perhaps lacking a touch of concentration in comparison to the other wines. 93/A

2020 (Westhofen) Morstein Riesling GG

Pure, clear, round, with good acidity and length. Some lime. 93/A
