Prinz SALM (Nahe and Rheinhessen) Part III -- Current Release Fruity-Style Rieslings

2021 Riesling   Two Princes

I suppose that technically this is a feinherb or halbtrocken wine; it tastes virtually dry. It is medium-light in weight with excellent clarity to its mineral-driven fruit. The acidity is crisp and almost completely neutralizes whatever residual sugar is still in the wine. In short, this is a great bargain for aperitif wines and for wines with light, casual meals. Screw cap closure. 10.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 04 22. 90/A+

2020 (Wallhausen) Felseneck Riesling Kabinett  (VDP Grosse Lage)

Although I did not have the two side-by-side, my notes on this wine are very similar to the 2021 auction Kabinett reviewed below. This wine is intense and crystalline with plenty of energy and it is almost dry on the finish; apricot fruit is just starting to emerge. Screw cap closure. 8.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 10 21. 92+/A

2021 (Wallhausen) Felseneck Riesling Kabinett gold capsule  (auction wine)  (VDP Grosse Lage)

Intense, pure, penetrating, almost dry on the finish. From the Nahe portion of the estate. 93/A+

2018 (Wallhäuser) Felseneck Riesling Spätlese  (VDP Grosse Lage)

This wine is rather sweet for a Spätlese and has a somewhat relaxed acidity, so to get it in balance, I think you need to serve this perhaps a little cooler than is normally the case for Spätlese. Still, there is attractive nectarine fruit in a light, elegant body. Cork closure. 8% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 01 19.  90/B+

2019 Roxheimer Berg Riesling Spätlese   (VDP Erste Lage)

This is classic Spätlese with apricot and nectarine skin flavors and good balance of the sugar and acidity to give the sharpness and to cut the sweet (although it definitely is there). Cork Closure. 8% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 011 20. 92/A

2020 Roxheimer Berg Riesling Spätlese  (VDP Erste Lage)

Pure, balanced, apricot fruit, some sweetness balanced by acidity. Less assertive than the 2019, but good nonetheless. Cork closure. 8% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 05 21. 91+/A-

2018 Scharlachberg (Bingen) Riesling Auslese

This is a beautiful wine, ready for drinking now, although with its balance, it should age for decades. In the mouth, the wine is light in weight, ethereal, and the sweetness shows but is perfectly balanced by the acidity which gives a piquant incisiveness to the wine. The wine for the moment displays honeyed apple fruit. Cork closure. 7.5% stated alcohol. Last digits of A.P. Nr.: 15 19.  95/A
