As with some of my other recent postings, one sees here some of the unevenness of the vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin.
Pierre DAMOY
2017 Chapelle-Chambertin
Damoy’s Chapelle-Chambertin displays red fruits, especially strawberries, plenty of minerality, a medium-light body, and shows some energy. (92-94)
Dominique GALLOIS
2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moînes
This Gevrey-Combe aux Moînes has good acidity for the vintage, along with red fruits and energy. However, there is not the precision of a still better wine. (90-92)
2017 Charmes-Chambertin
The nose shows black walnut aromas, possibly a sign of reduction (it should disappear with time). The mouth is light with finesse and pure red fruits, especially strawberries, that give light minerality. (91-93)
Camille GIROUD
2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques
There’s some creaminess in this wine with purity, length, and freshness to the red and dark fruits, but the wildness of the vineyard does not show, as is the case with many 2017 Lavaut St-Jacques. (90-92)
2017 Charmes-Chambertin
Giroud’s Charmes-Chambertin has a creamy texture, red fruits, and a little minerality. (91-93)
Philippe LIVERA
2017 Chapelle-Chambertin
The nose of Livera’s Chapelle-Chambertin is quite mineral. The wine is creamy, medium-weight, and light on the tongue, but as with many 2017 Chapelle-Chambertins, lacks the tension that is an important characteristic of the vineyard. (91-93)
Henri MAGNIEN
2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin
This wine has mineral aromas. The mouth is medium-weight with good energy and some acidity in its attack. There’s good length and some creaminess to the texture. (92-94)
Cécille TREMBLAY
2017 Chapelle-Chambertin
Tremblay has been around long enough that one no longer uses the adjective “rising” to describe her as a star. This wine is pure, deep, and precise with red fruits and good minerality. But reflecting so many of the wines of this vintage, the tension and energy typical of Chapelle-Chambertin are not on display here. (92-95)
Domaine des VAROILLES
2017 Charmes-Chambertin
This is a relaxed, easy wine with red and dark fruits and light minerality. The wine lacks definition, though. (89-91)
