Maison MARCHAND-TAWSE (Nuits-Saint-Georges) -- 2016 Pat II: Red Grands Crus Tasted from Barrel and Tank

(Originally published December 2017)

The Marchand-Tawse grands crus, like the lower appellations, are very good examples of their respective appellations, but there’s not a lot of any one wine.

2016 Clos Saint-Denis
The Clos St-Denis is light with great finesse, dusty spiciness, mineral dark fruits, quality tannins (but they are present), and overall freshness of the vintage. 25% whole clusters, two of the three barrels are new. (92-95)

2016 Clos de la Roche
Typical Clos de la Roche minerality in the wine which also features fresh red fruits, and great tension and energy. Two barrels here, one of which is new, and 25% whole clusters. (93-96)

2016 Charmes-Chambertin
The Charmes-Chambertin is medium-light with finesse, good raciness, strawberry fruit, and intensity. It is a tightly-wound wine. Only one barrel here. (91-95)

2016 Echézeaux
There’s but a single barrel of this wine, too. The nose has Vosne spice, and the mouth shows spicy dark fruit, good substance, penetration, and great energy. This wine comes from the Poulaillières lieu-dit. (92-96)

2016 Corton-Renards
The Corton-Renards is spicy in the nose. The mouth shows red fruits and minerality with depth, power, but also finesse. There’s very good energy and freshness to this wine. No whole clusters here. (93-96)
