2016 Beaujolais recently tasted: Berthier, Breton, Chanrion/Vôute des Crozes, Chignard, Diochon/Paternotre, Drouhin/Hospices de Belleville

(Originally published 4 May 2018.)

This is a classic-styled vintage with very good wines available. Looking down the road, there isn't going to be very much available from 2017 (a statement that applies to all of France, save Burgundy), so you may want to consider stocking up.

Pascal BERTHIER

2016 Saint-Amour   Esprit de Séduction
This wine is medium-weight and easy to drink for its voluptuous, fresh, and intense red and dark fruits. Give it a little while to open up. 13.5% stated alcohol.  89/B+

Guy BRETON

2016 Beaujolais-Villages   Cuvée Marylou
This is a lighter-style wine with salty strawberry jam fruit and decent freshness. Perhaps a bit stylized in the unsulphured way (with a bit of sulphur added at bottling), but enjoyable all the same. 12% stated alcohol. 87/B+

2016 Côte de Brouilly
This wine is pure delight for current drinking with sensual, ripe (but not overripe) dark cherry fruit, a bit of spice, and good acidity and grip. Drink over the next 7-15 years. Lot L.01.16. 12.5% stated alcohol. 91/A

2016 Morgon    Vieilles Vignes
The Morgon shows more depth and concentration than the Beaujolais-Villages and the fruit here is dark plums with some minerality. Lot L.01.16 12.5% stated alcohol. 88/B

Nicole et Romain CHANRION/Domaine de la VOÛTE DES CROZES

2016 Côte de Brouilly
One of the most reliable Beaujolais producers I know, Chanrion has produced a real gem here. The wine has wild strawberry and violet aromas and flavors in a medium-weight body with good density, intensity, and length. The wine is excellent for current drinking and should last at least 5-10 years more. 13% stated alcohol.  92/A

Domaine CHIGNARD/Cédric CHIGNARD

2016 Fleurie    Les Moriers
This is one of the best Fleuries I’ve had from Chignard in a number of years. The wine has forward, expressive red cherry fruit with a hint of licorice and overall sensuality. Fleurie generally can age well, but this wine is so delicious that I’d drink it over the next 2-4 years. 12.5% stated alcohol. 91/A

2016 Juliénas    Beauvernay
With red and dark cherry fruit and a bit more hardness than the Fleurie, this is calssic Juliénas. Good for drinking over the next 4-8+ years. 12.5% stated alcohol. 91/A

Domaine DIOCHON/F. PATERNOTRE

2016 Moulin-à-Vent    Cuvée Vieilles Vignes
This is an unusually structured version of Diochon’s Moulin-à-Vent. The wine has dark fruit in a medium-weight body, but it is tannic and there is no coherence to the fruit. 13% stated alcohol. Lot L.01.16.  ?

Joseph DROUHIN/Domaine des HOSPICES DE BELLEVILLE

2016 Brouilly
The Brouilly  is round and pure with caressing dark fruits, minerality,a dn depth. Harvested 26 September, 100% whole clusters. 91/A

2016 Morgon
This outstanding Morgon has mineral red cherry aromas and flavors. In the mouth the wine is light, direct, and pure. Harvested 22 September, 70% whole clusters.  92/A

2016 Fleurie
The Fleurie is mineral with dark fruits and violets typical of Fleurie, and the wine is light on the palate with good purity. Harvested 21 September. 60% whole clusters.  90+/A-
