Nahe 2017 and 2016 Grosses Gewächs Riesling Part I: Diel, Dönnhoff, Kruger-Rumpf, Salm, Schäfer

(Originally published 16 September 2018.)

Yet again, the Nahe shows outstanding across-the-board quality for its Rieslings.

Schlossgut DIEL

2016 (Dorsheim) Burgberg Riesling GG
Excellent apricot fruit in nose and mouth with strong underlying acidity Medium-weight. A combination of power and finesse. 92(+)/A

2017 (Dorsheim) Goldloch Riesling GG
Medium-light, apricot, good acidity, intensity, length. 93(+)/A

2017 (Dorsheim) Pittermännchen Riesling GG
Light in mouth, good peach fruit, good acidity, harmonious. 93/A

DÖNNHOFF

2017 (Roxheim) Höllenpfad in Mühlenberg Riesling GG
Some breadth and smoothness here (but not creamy); incipient apricot. Not as concentrated or energetic as the best Dönnhoff wines. 91(+)/A-

2017 (Bad Kreuznach) Krötenpfuhl Riesling GG
Very slight honey in nose and mouth to go with peach fruit; medium-light body, energetic, nervy. 93/A

KRUGER-RUMPF

Although these wines are good, I found them below the level that I usually perceive from this excellent estate.

2017 (Dorsheim) Burgberg Rieslng GG
Apricot nose, medium-weight, some power; acidity is here but not overly aggressive. 91+/A-

2017 (Münster) Dautenpflänzer Riesling GG
Apricot and yellow peach skin aromas and flavors. Broad. Usual dark plums not showing here. 90/B+?

2017 (Münster) Im Pittersberg Riesling GG
Quite acidic for the moment. Minerality and promise are here, but hard to evaluate for now (note: I tasted this wine at the end of a day of tasting). ?

Prinz SALM

2016 (Wallhausen) Felseneck Riesling GG

Light minerality in nose, touch of honey; smooth, medium-weight, light minerality in mouth, too — needs time. 90+/B+

Joh. Bapt. SCHÄFER

2017 (Dorsheim) Goldloch Riesling GG
Compared to Diel's Goldloch, this is a bit more austere and higher in acidity, but still with good depth and promise for its minerality. 92(+)/A

2017 (Dorsheim) Pittermännchen Riesling GG
Apple, honey, peach nose; smooth, pure, harmonious, long, peach fruit in the mouth. Quite similar to Diel's Pittermännchen. 93/A
