Franken Silvaner Grosses Gewächs -- 2016 and 2017: Part I: Bickel-Stumpf, Bürgerspital, Juliusspital, Am Stein/Knoll, May, Schwab

(Originally published 13 September 2018.)

It’s still early, but many of these wines were showing quite well, already.

BICKEL-STMPF

2016 (Thürngersheim) Rothlauf Silvaner GG
Shy nose, a bit mineral. Smooth texture, sculpted, lemony. 90/B+

BÜRGERSPITAL ZUM HEILIGEN GEIST

2017 (Würzburger) Stein Silvaner GG
Herbal nose. The mouth is somewhat austere with stony, limestone elements. Needs time. 89(+)/B

2017 (Würzburger) Stein-Harfe Silvaner GG
This wine is closed, firm, and sculpted; it needs time. 90(+)/B+

JULIUSSPITAL WÜRZBURG

2016 (Würzburger) Stein Silvaner GG
Even after an extra year in bottle, this wine is still firm, tight, and closed, but it is  promising: stony, sculpted, elegant. 91(+)/A-

Weingut AM STEIN/Ludwig KNOLL

This biodynamic estates is one of my favorites in the region.

2017 (Stetten) Stein Silvaner GG
Floral and limestone notes in the nose. The mouth is smooth, pure, limestone vanilla, long, precise. 94/A+

Rudolf MAY

2017 (Thürngersheim) Rothlauf Silvaner GG
The nose here is closed with slight butter overtones. The mouth has nice acidity, slight butter, nice mineralogy. Good length. 92/A

2017 (Retzstadt) Himmelspfad Silvaner GG
Butter popcorn nose. Clear, round, some butter on the palate. One-dimensional for now, but pleasing. Some limestone showing. 89+/B

Gregor SCHWAB

2017 (Thürngersheim) Rothlauf Silvaner GG
The nose is closed. The mouth is smooth and round with good length. Some minerality here. 90/B+
