My description of 2016 vintage conditions and notes on these and Cathiard’s other 2016s tasted from barrel a year ago are here. As you can see, each of these four wines was at, or near, the top of the range I estimated them from barrel.
2016 Coteaux Bourguignons
The Coteaux Bourguignons has spicy dark fruits in a medium-weight body. It doesn’t have quite the silkiness of pure Pinot Noir (it’s about 60% Gamay, 40% Pinot Noir). Because of the small harvest due to the frost, the Bourgogne Pinot Noir was not made in 2016 and the grapes went into this wine. 88/A
2016 Vosne-Romanée
The nose shows spicy Vosne red fruits. The mouth is medium-weight with good concentration and depth to its spicy dark fruits. The wine is attractive to drink now for its freshness but really needs about another 12-15 years to reach full maturity. Cathiard lost about 1/3 of the crop for this wine to mildew. 92/A
2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey
Both nose and mouth show spicy dark fruits. The wine is pure, fresh, concentrated, and precise. Here, expect 15+ years to full maturity. 94/A
2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Raignots
The nose of the Raignots shows clove, allspice, and dark fruits. There are fireworks in the mouth with red and dark fruits, finesse, and length. There was no frost damage here, so the wine shows less concentration than the Thorey. This wine drinks beautifully now but should also age well. 94+/A
