Domaine Éric de SUREMAIN/Château de MONTHÉLIE (Monthélie) -- 2015s Tasted from Bottle

(Originally published 14 August 2018.)

Monthélie, just around the corner from Volnay, is a colder climate, and so it does well in warm years such as 2015, offering competition with the wines of its better-known neighbor. De Suremain is a top source for Monthélie, and there are also very good wines from Rully to be had here.

The two Monthélie wines bear the designation Château de Monthélie.

In white:

2015 Rully    1er Cru   Agneux
This wine has freshness, apply fruit, and nice grip. There’s a touch of fat here, but it’s not bothersome. 90/B+

In red:

2015 Rully    1er Cru   Préaux
The red Rully-Préaux has dark fruits, density, and minerality. There’s some tannin showing, but the wine drinks well currently. 91/A-

2015 Monthélie
Here is a prime example of the value that Monthélie can provide in a warm year. The wine is smooth and light on the palate with long strawberry fruit and very good finesse. It is a pleasure to drink right now. 92/A

2015 Monthélie    1er Cru    Sur La Velle
There’s more complexity in this wine than in the village wine, and even layering. The fruit is darker here, too. The wine is light on the palate and shows great finesse. 93/A
