Miscellaneous Red Burgundies from 2020 and 2019 Tasted from Bottle: Berger, Jacqueson, Raquillet, Sarrazin, Soeur Cadette

Some unevenness in this selection, but there is quality to be had for not all that much money compared to Côte d'Or wines.

BERGER Père & Fils

2020 Rully   vieilles vignes

I am able to find only one producer in Cheilly-les-Maranges, Domaine Berger-Rive; I believe that this is an alternate label for that producer. It is a superb wine for a village Rully with great freshness and delicacy to its red berry fruits — more the style of 2017 than 2020. DIAM 5 closure. 13% stated alcohol.  90/A

P. & M. JACQUESON

Pierre Jacqueson, son of Paul and brother of Marie, joined the team in 2015. Because of the ripeness of recent vintages, it’s hard to be certain whether there has been a change to a fruitier, more extracted style, but it seems to be a distinct possibility. Future vintages should make the answer clear.

2019 Rully   1er Cru   Cloux

I’ve experience Pinot Noir from the New World like this, but not from Burgundy, not even in 2003. Blind, I would have guessed this to have been from the Southern Rhone due to the nature of the dark plum and berry fruit and the richness of the wine. The wine is balanced and quite powerful for a Burgundy. With time, maybe this will become more typical, but for now, be forewarned that this is an enjoyable, but atypical Burgundy. Cork closure. 13.5% stated alcohol. Lot LCLX19BT. 86(+?)?/C

2020 Mercurey  Les Vaux

This wine is rich with ripe but still undeveloped fruit, plenty of extract (but not excessive), and a smooth, slightly sappy texture. This wine is always going to be rustic (it’s Mercurey, after all), but I think with 6-10 years in the cellar, the wine should come into better focus and harmony. Cork closure. 13.5% stated alcohol. Lot LMER20BT. 88/B+

François RAQUILLET

2019 Bourgogne  Pinot Noir

This wine is deep and rich with intense, dense raspberry and strawberry fruit, minerality, and moderate acidity, and some freshness. Very ripe Burgundies such as this often improve with substantial aging, acquiring more precision and complexity, and that may be the case with this one. Cork closure. 13% stated alcohol. L BPN01. 88+/B+

Michel SARRAZIN & Fils

Sarrazin harvests by machine and purchases plenty of new François Frères barrels for his wine. In the end, though, the wines seem to turn out.

2020 Mercurey  La Perrière

Like so many of the 2020s I’m tasting, this wine is very immature and packed with powerful dark fruits with some soy and salinity that require time to mature and come in focus and balance. At this point, there’s just raw power in the wine. Cork closure. 13.5% stated alcohol.   87(+)/B

La SOEUR CADETTE

2020 Bourgogne

This wine is rich yet balanced with dark fruits and perhaps just a hint of gaminess. It should make for good drinking over the next 5+ years. Cork closure. 13% stated alcohol. Lot LBRM20. 90/A
