Louis JADOT (Beaune) -- 2018 Part II: Côte de Beaune Reds Tasted from Barrel Samples

(Please see my overall vintage review here.)

This selection of Côte de Beaune reds is most successful, even more so considering the trickiness of the vintage for a large producer such as Jadot because of the ultra-rapid but uneven ripening.

Wines not indicated as from Domaine Louis Jadot, Domaine Gagey, or Domaine des Héritiers Jadot, are negociant wines.

2018 Chorey-les-Beaune   Beaumonts    Domaine Gagey
This sample still showed reduction in nose and mouth, but beyond that is attractive red cherry fruit, good grip, acidity, and freshness in a medium-weight body. (86-89)

2018 Monthélie   1er Cru   Champs Fuillot   Domaine Louis Jadot
Champs Fuillot is a continuation of the lower part of Volnay’s Clos des Chênes, and so a smart value vineyard. This wine shows good minerality, red fruits, penetration, tension, and finesse. (88-91)

2018 Beaune   1er Cru   Cras   Domaine Gagey
The nose was closed, but in the mouth, the wine showed good acidity, spicy red fruits, a good acid/tannins structure, and length. (89-92)

2018 Beaune   1er Cru   Clos des Couchereaux    Domaine Héritiers Louis Jadot
The Clos des Couchereaux has floral aromas. The mouth is broader and airier, and less tannic than the Cras, with good acidity and round tannins. (88-91)

2018 Beaune   1er Cru   Clos des Ursules    Domaine Héritiers Louis Jadot
One of Jadot’s flagship wines, the Clos des Ursules has a floral, honeysuckle nose. The mouth is firm and still undeveloped, but very promising with good tannin and acid. As usual, it is a wine that will need some cellaring. The vines here are about 40-50 years old. (92-94)

2018 Volnay   1er Cru  Clos de la Barre
Although not owning this vineyard, Jadot effectively farms it (it is a Jadot monopole even though technically a negociant wine). The nose is floral. In the mouth, the wine shows Volnay finesse with density to its red and dark fruits, some floral aspects, minerality, and good structure. Cellar time will be required, but also rewarded by this fine wine.  (92-94)

2018 Pommard     1er Cru   Grands Epenots
Iron notes are present both in the nose and the mouth. The wine is pure with red fruits, voluptuousness but also structure, a velvet texture, and good acidity. (92-94)

2018 Corton-Pougets     Domaine Héritiers Louis Jadot
The nose is floral and mineral. The mouth is structured and chalky with long, juicy dark fruit flavors and good penetration. There is a very good future here, but as usual with Corton-Pougets, it’s a wine that will need substantial cellar time. (93-96)
