Louis JADOT (Beaune) 2015 Tasted from Barrel Part I: Côte de Beaune Reds

(Originally published 15 February 2017.)

For an operation with as many different wines as Jadot has, the quality is really quite amazing. Harvesting started on 29 August, with the whites, I suppose. There was very little triage required. Alcohols began quickly. Malolactic fermentations mostly finished in spring, some in July.

Very successful wines here that are certainly worthy of your interest.

2015 Santenay    Clos de Malte   Domaine Louis Jadot
Santenay is one of the value villages of the Côte d’Or where you can get very fine Burgundy — if you choose the right producers — for relatively little money. Jadot is one of those producers. The wine is pure with lightness and minerality plus pomegranate fruit. (87-90)

2015 Santenay   Clos des Gatsulards   Domaine Gagey
This vineyard is in front of the Clos de Malte, but higher up and although south-facing, also windy. It is steep with stony soils. The wine is broader in nose and mouth than the Clos de Malte with dark berry fruit and good lightness and finesse. It should provide good drinking for the first decade or so while the more serious 2015s age. (86-89)

2015 Pernand-Vergelesses    1er Cru    Clos de la Croix de Pierre    Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
Pernand is another excellent location to look for value. The wine shows the roundness I associate with Pernand, plumpness, saltiness, and minerality. There’s also some power. The fruits are dark. (89-92)

2015 Savigny-les-Beaune    1er Cru    Clos des Guettes    Domaine Gagey
Jadot’s Guettes has a floral nose, followed by a mineral, salty mouth that is medium-weigh but broad with dark fruits. (88-91)

2015 Savigny-les-Beaune     1er Cru    La Dominode    Domaine Louis Jadot
The Dominode is certainly a wine to be on the lookout for. The floral aromas are floowed by a mouth that although tannic and structured, also shows good balance and freshness. This is one that should be able to take long aging. (90-94)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru     Theurons    Domaine Gagey
Be sure to note that this is the Domaine Gagey version of Beaune-Theurons that I am reviewing, as Jadot also has a Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot version. The nose is meaty. The mouth shows finesse and firmness without any heaviness, and with spicy dark fruits.  (89-93)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru   Grèves      Domaine Gagey
Beginning with white flower aromas, this wine is light and sculpted in the mouth with long dark fruits, and excellent drive. It should be an exciting wine. (91-95)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru   Les Bressandes     Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
The Beaune-Bressandes has restrained stoniness in the nose. The mouth is round with a chewier texture than in the preceding wines. The mouth is medium-weight and with dark fruit and tannins. The wine is promising, but relatively closed for the moment. (89-93)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru   Clos des Chouchereaux   Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
The vineyard here was very heavily-hailed in 2014, but came back well in 2015. It is south-facing, and so gets good sunlight. Although light on the palate, the wine shows good substance and is medium-weight The dark fruits are somewhat chiseled and there are some tannins on the finish. (90-94)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru   Aux Cras      Domaine Gagey
The Beaune-Cras displays finesse, depth, elegance, and freshness along with density and concentration to go with its dark fruits. An outstanding performance. (91-94)

2015 Beaune    1er Cru     Boucherottes    Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
Jadot’s Beaune-Boucherottes is round and light with less tannin showing than int he previous wines. It is medium-weight and smooth on the mid palate with slightly spicy dark fruit. It should drink well young.  (89-92)

2015 Beaune     1er Cru     Clos des Ursules    Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
As usual, the flagship Beaune-Clos des Ursules is the class of the Beaunes. The wine is smooth and long with dark fruit. It is elegant but with depth. Being Clos des Ursules, there are of course, some tannins — it is a wine for the long term. (91-95)

2015 Volnay    1er Cru      Santenots
A negociant wine from purchased grapes, the Volnay-Sanenots has stony notes in the nose. The mouth is elegant for a young Santenots, but there are tannins here. The wine has dark fruits and some noble austerity. (89-93)

2015 Volnay    1er Cru    En Orveau      Domaine Gagey
Here we move to more finesse and a silky, smooth texture with good length and darker fruits. This is the elegant side of Volnay. (90-93)

2015 Volnay     1er Cru     Clos de la Barre
Technically a negociant wine, but Jadot has a big hand and takes all the vineyard fruit, making it a monopole. The floral aromas are followed by dense, dark fruit in the mouth with some licorice and overall smoothness. (91-94)

2015 Pommard    1er Cru    Clos de la Commeraine
Also from purchased fruit, the Clos de la Commeraine shows finesse in texture for a Pommard, especially one with heavy soils. The texture almost makes it a Volnay-Caillerets of Pommard in its texture. The fruit is dark with clarity and finesse, but there are also some tannins here to support aging. (90-93)

2015 Pommard    1er Cru    Grands Epenots
The Grands Epenots has soy and balsamic aromas. The mouth is round with a silky texture to the long, dark fruit. There are also some ginger notes. The tannins are round, reflecting the less rustic side of Pommard. This, too, is a negociant wine. (90-93)

2015 Pommard     1er Cru   Rugiens
The nose of the Rugiens features spices. The mouth features spicy dark fruit with elegance for a Rugiens, density, and some tannins. (90-93)

2015 Corton   Grèves     Domaine Louis Jadot
The nose here shows ginger and Asian spices. The mouth is light, spicy, with clarity. The alcohol is about 13.8-14º, but one doesn’t sense that it in any way. The wine shows energy, firmness, and has a tannic finish.  (90-94)

2015 Corton   Pougets   Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot

Last for Côte de Beaune reds, the Corton-Pougets has stoniness in the nose. The texture, too, is stony and the wine features dark fruit, licorice, and good structure. (92-95)
