Louis BOILLOT et Fils (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2017 Part II: Côte de Nuits Tasted from Barrel

Boillot is an excellent and very consistent producer who gets nowhere near the recognition that he deserves. As with his Côte de Beaune 2017s, the quality of each of these wines is substantially above what the appellation would lead one to expect. Don’t miss them, if you get the chance.

2017 Bourgogne   Pinot Noir
Some producers came up with outstanding Bourgogne in 2017, and Boillot is one of them. Bargain hunters, be on the lookout. The wine is pure, focused, and very precise with red fruits, salinity, and good acidity for the vintage. (89-91)

2017 Côte de Nuits-Villages
The Côte de Nuits-Villages has darker fruit and a little more acidity showing than the Bourgogne. The wine is mineral and round with black cherries, purity, and precision. It, too, is a wine that is sure to provide excellent value. (90-92)

2017 Fixin
Boillot’s Fixin is less open than the foregoing wines, but still very pure and precise in its clear red fruits. From 60 year-old vines just below the wall of the Clos du Chapître. (89-91)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny
The Chambolle is 90% from Les Beaux Bruns, 10% from Derrière le Four. The wins is pure, sensual, and mineral with red fruits that are precise, intense, and fresh. Some salinity here, too. (91-93)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin
This wine is from six vineyards scattered around Gevrey; the youngest vines are more than 50 years-old. This wine is juicy, energetic, and nervous with red and dark berry fruit, salinity, and some tannins showing on the finish. (91-93)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    Les Evocelles
The Gevrey, Evocelles is crisp, pure, and energetic with depth, precision, and good concentration and length. The fruits are dark. (92-95)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru   Champonnet
The Gevrey-Champonnet is expressive and fruity in the nose. The mouth features crystalline dark fruits, purity, length, and smooth texture. Plenty of energy and freshness here, too. (92-95)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru   Cherbaudes
From 105 year-old vines, the Gevrey-Cherbaudes has precise cherry aromas. The mouth is round, pure, crystalline, and fresh with more calm than the Champonnet. The acidity gives the wine excellent freshness. (92-95)

2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru    Les Prulilers
Last, the Nuits-Pruliers has dark berry fruits with a tannic underpinning, salinity, penetration, depth, and power. It is classic Pruliers. (93-95)
