Recent vintages have been challenging in the region due to problems such as frost, hail, and scorching weather. Each wine has to be evaluated on its own, not by vintage.
Château GRÉA
2021 Côtes-du-Jura Chardonnay
For an inexpensive wine, this does very well. It is Chardonnay done in a non-oxidative style. There are walnut and lemon elements to the aromas and flavors and the wine is medium-light with good enough acidity. It’s probably best drunk over the next year or two. Agglomerate cork closure. 12.5% stated alcohol. Lot L 4(?)0 03. 88/B
Domaine du PÉLICAN/Marquis d’ANGERVILLE
2019 Arbois Chardonnay
A most disappointing wine from this outstanding producer: fat and rich with sweetness either from residual sugar or sucrosity (if the latter, it should eventually burn off). DIAM 10 closure. 13.5% stated alcohol. 85/C
Domaine de la PINTE
2019 Arbois Chardonnay
This wine is a bit different from the other Chardonnays here. Although it’s not oxidative, there is a hint of oxidation here that adds complexity to the buttery aromas and flavors. The body is medium-weight and there’s a touch of glossiness to the texture, the only perceptible aspect of the high alcohol. It’s a wine that works better with food (poultry, pork, fish, cheese) than on its own. Certified organic and biodynamic. Cork closure. 14.5% stated alcohol. 90/B+
Bénédicte & Stéphane TISSOT/Domaine André et Mireille TISSOT
2019 Arbois Chardonnay Patchwork
From a selection of vines that are more than 25 years-old, 60% planted on clay soils, 40% on limestone. Aged in cask for a year. Earthy minerality characteristic of Jura Chardonnay in both the nose and mouth, lemony fruit centering around lemon drop and lemon peel with hints of oxidation (not negative). Medium-light body, good concentration and intensity, long finish. Certified organic and biodynamic. Cork closure. 14% stated alcohol. Lot L 72-19. 91/A-
