Harvesting began here on 5 September. There was no triage, and Fred Mugnier characterized overall yields as “correct”— 35-40 hl/ha., which is actually modest when one factors in the tendency of vines affected by frost (as most of his were in 2016) to produce abundantly the following year.
All grapes were destemmed. Malolactic fermentations took place at various dates.
This is an outstanding to brilliant vintage at Mugnier; it may not be a collector’s vintage for the reds, but as the French would say, tant mieux!
2017 Chambolle-Musigny
The Chambolle has red fruit aromas and flavors. It is elegant and pure with great finesse. Mugnier calls it a joyous wine. (91-93)
2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées
I find some earthiness on the nose. The mouth shows dark fruit that is direct and harmonious, and the wine is light on the palate. There, more structure here than in the village wine, as one of course expects. Additionally, the wine has precision and purity and is long and ethereal. (93-95)
2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale rouge
The Clos de la Maréchale red has red fruits, lightness, and finesse. The wine is pure but as one would expect from Nuits, it is more tannic than the foregoing wines. (93-95)
2017 Bonnes-Mares
The Bonnes-Mares has earthy aromas. The mouth is light with pure and precise dark fruits, good length, and crystallinity. (95-97)
2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses
Mugnier’s Amoureuses has red and dark fruits with spice. The wine shows plenty of finesse — it is light, airy, and energetic. It is a beautiful expression of Amoureuses. (95-98)
2017 Musigny
Here, the fruit is darker than for the Amoureuses and there is more weight, but still great finesse, freshness, airiness, length, and minerality. (96-98)
2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale
Yet another example of the outstanding quality of the whites in 2017. This wine is pure, intense, deep, and precise with minerality. It shows an excellent acidic attack, freshness, and quince fruit. (93-95)
