Hubert et Laurent LIGNIER (Morey-Saint-Denis) -- 2016 Part II: Premiers and Grands Crus Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published January 2018)

Vintage conditions are described here.

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Baudes
Lignier was lucky and the frost damage for the Baudes wasn’t terribly serious, unlike almost all other vineyards in Chambolle. The wine features spicy dark fruits that are penetrating and broad. The wine still tastes quite young and it shows good energy and length. About 20-25% whole clusters here. (90-94)

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis   1er Cru   La Riotte
The Morey-Riotte has strawberry and raspberry fruit with good acidity and length. It’s an easily-approachable wine and less heavy than the Baudes. No whole clusters here, 25% new oak. (90-93)

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis     1er Cru     Les Chaffots
The Morey-Chaffots overall has darker fruit than the Riotte, but there is still some raspberry here. The wine is light on the palate with good length and energy. 30% new oak, 25% whole clusters. (91-94)

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis    1er Cru     Chenevery
Lignier’s Morey-Chenevery displays dark fruits, great energy, and more body here than in the prior wines. The malolactic fermentation was later here, and so this seems to be a wine that will need some aging before bottling. No whole clusters, 1/3 new oak.  (90-94)

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis    1er Cru   vieilles vignes
The Morey 1er Cru vieilles vignes is composed about 2/3 from the Faconnières vineyard and 1/3 from Chenevery. The wine shows more depth and breadth than the preceding with opulent red fruits and some dark ones. There’s a fair amount of power here and good length. Laurent Lignier said that the bunches were particularly small here. About 25% whole clusters and 1/3 new oak. (92-95)

2016 Griotte-Chambertin
The Griotte-Chambertin is made from purchased grapes from a vineyard that is more than 50 years-old. The wine is intense, deep, powerful, broad, and fresh with its red cherry fruit that is typical of the vineyard. (92-96)

2016 Charmes-Chambertin
The Charmes-Chambertin is raised in a cask that is one year-old — no new wood on this wine. It has dark and red raspberry fruit with a bit of syrup quality to it. The wine is powerful, long, elegant, and fresh. (92-95)

2016 Clos de la Roche
Last, the Clos de la Roche is dense, powerful, and pure with deep red and dark fruits, and good energy, tension, and length. The wine is an excellent exposition of the terroir of Clos de la Roche. (93-96)
