Domaines BERTHAUT-GERBET (Fixin), René/Bernard BOUVIER (Gevrey-Chambertin), CLOS SAINT-LOUIS (Fixin), DUROCHÉ (Gevrey-Chambertin), and Sylvie ESMONIN (Gevrey-Chambertin) -- 2018 Tasted from Barrel Samples,

Finishing the Gevrey overview; some estates to watch here.

BERTHAUT-GERBET

Amélie Berthaut is one of/ the up-and-coming stars of the Côte de Nuits. Certified organic.

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin    Combe du Dessus
Moderate acidity, dark fruits, finesse, but lacking some structure that one finds in still better wines. (87-89)

René/Bernard BOUVIER

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin     1er Cru     Champeaux
The red fruits are a bit pinched. This wine is not well-balanced -- too acidic. (87-89)

2018 Charmes-Chambertin
Still unformed, but dense with dark fruits, depth, and purity. Promising, though. (92-93)

Domaine du CLOS SAINT-LOUIS

This is my first encounter with the wines of Virginie Bernard, and it is impressive. The estate consists of 19 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin and further north.

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin    Etelois
Etelois is a very well-sited village climat, just below Griotte-Chambertin and its wines show many of the characteristics of Griotte-Chambertin. Pure red fruits, balanced, fresh, and precise. 92/A

DUROCHÉ

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin    Lavaux-Saint-Jacques
Good minerality to go with red fruits. Moderate acidity. (91-93)

Sylvie ESMONIN

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru   Clos Saint-Jacques
Gamy aromas typical of Clos Saint-Jacques. In the mouth, dark fruits, juicy, and long, but lacking the differentiation of still better wines.  (91-93)
