Domaine ROSSIGNOL-TRAPET (Gevrey-Chabertin) -- 2017 Tasted from Barrel

Harvesting generally began on 7 September (the Combottes, always early to ripen here, came in on 5 September). Yields were “generous” — comparable to those of 2009. There was some green harvesting over the summer.

With very little malic acidity — characteristic for the vintage — malos went very quickly. The village Gevrey, the premier cru Gevreys, and the grands crus have about 60% whole cluster fruit. There was very little chaptalization in this vintage.

2017 Bourgogne    Pinot Noir
This wine is pure, spicy, and easy to enjoy with its red fruits in a smooth and light body. 50% whole clusters in this wine. From the Grands Champs lieu-dit in Gevrey-Chambertin. (87-89)

2017 Beaune    1er Cru   Les Teurons
The Beaune-Teurons is somewhat rounder with darker fruit and more tannin than the Bourgogne. The wine is smooth on the palate and has good salinity. (89-91)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    vieilles vignes
From the Chétillons lieu-dit, this wine is medium-weight with salinity, red fruits, some Gevrey wildness, and round tannins.  (90-92)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    Aux Etelois
From a village lieu-dit immediately below Griotte-Chambertin, this wine has spicy aromas, and spicy cherry flavors. It is medium-weight with good intensity and length — a top performer for a village wine. About 75% whole clusters in this wine. (91-93)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru     Les Cherbaudes
The Gevrey-Cherbaudes has stony aromas. The mouth has minerality with stony red fruits and it is medium-weight with good length, energy, and finesse. (92-94)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru    Aux Combottes
Mineral dark cherry aromas characterize the nose of the Gevrey-Combottes . The mouth shows more weight and roundness than the previous wines, together with dark fruits, length, and finesse. (92-94)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru   Les Corbeaux
Rossignol-Trapet’s Gevrey-Corbeaux is deep and pure in the nose with dark cherry and almond blossom aromas. The mouth is pure with dark fruits, finesse, minerality, a smooth texture, and good energy. (92-94)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru   Clos Prieur
Gevrey-Clos Prieur is a vineyard located immediately below Mazis-Chambertin. This wine has black walnut aromas. The mouth shows dark fruits, black walnuts, roundness, and more exoticism and power but less finesse than the Corbeaux. (92-94)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru     Petite Chapelle
Located primarily beneath Chapelle-Chambertin, with a small part beneath Gevrey-Cherbaudes, Gevrey-Petite Chapelle is a vineyard that generally is tightly wound with good tension and energy. That certainly is the case here. The nose has stony and raspberry aromas. The mouth is stony and nervy with very good energy and tension to its red fruits. There’s more tannin apparent here than in the Clos Prieur. (92-95)

2017 Latricières-Chambertin
The Latricières-Chambertin is typically stony in the nose. The mouth shows mineral red fruits and good energy, even if the usual tension is not present in this vintage. The wine has good depth and nervosity, and some tannins are present. (93-95)

2017 Chapelle-Chambertin
The Chapelle-Chambertin is mineral and tightly-wound for the vintage with good structure and hardness, tannins, a slight bitterness on the finish, and good length. (93-95)

2017 Chambertin
The Chambertin is round with darker fruit and more body than the Chapelle-Chambertin. The wine has good freshness but with the nervosity of the Chapelle-Chambertin.  Excellent length and depth here. (94-96)
