Domaine ROLLIN Père & Fils (Pernand-Vergelesses) -- 2018 Part I: Red Wines Tasted from Bottle and Tank Samples

(Please see my overall comments on the 2018 vintage in the Côte d’ Or here.)

Simon Rollin, who began working with father Rémi in 2003, is now fully in charge at the domaine. He said that he began harvesting on 31 August with the reds. Quantities were “good.” As usual, the reds were 100% destemmed. There was a three-week cuvaison, and malolactic fermentations were done by December. Alcohols are in the range of 13-13.5º.

As the notes below indicate, this is an estate that got the vintage right.

2018 Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Beaune
This wine has a smooth texture with red currant fruit and is medium-light in weight. It is a very likable wine. Vines here average 40 years of age. 86/B

2018 Pernand-Vergelesses
An outstanding village wine. Red and dark fruits, good precision, mediuam-weight, finesse for Pernand. (89-92)

2018 Savigny-les-Beaune     Aux Grands Liards
And another outstanding village wine. Dark fruits in nose and mouth, good freshness, wildness, nervosity. Tannic backbone gives structure. (89-92)

2018 Aloxe-Corton
Red fruits, rounder than the Savigny, elegant for Aloxe. (89-91)

2018 Pernand-Vergelesses    1er Cru   Les Fichots
Red and dark fruits, dense, needs time, smooth texture and round tannins, good length. (91-93)

2018 Pernand-Vergelesses   1er Cru   Île des Vergelesses
Floral, slightly spicy nose. Smooth body, clear red fruits, elegant, medium-light, excellent length. Seems will drink sooner than the Fichots. (91-93)
