Domaine Paul et Marie JACQUESON (Rully) -- 2017 Tasted from Bottle

This is one of my favorite domaines on the Côte Chalonnaise. The 2017s here are good, but still disappointing compared to what I have found in other vintages. In particular, the reds lacked their usual precision.

In red:

2017 Mercurey    Les Vaux
Pretty red fruits in the nose and mouth, but unfortunately lacking the usual focus and precision. The body is medium-weight and smooth, but shows some tannins. 13% stated alcohol. Lot LMER17BT. 87/B

2017 Rully    Les Chaponnières
This is a fleshy wine with a perfumed nose and ripe, juicy, sweet red cherry fruit. It’s not a wine to seek if you’re looking for refinement and precision, but there is some elegance here and lots of enjoyment. 13% stated alcohol. Lot LCHAP17BT. 89/A-

2017 Mercurey     1er Cru    Les Naugues
This red-fruited wine is round and fuzzy with less grip, acidity, and precision than usual. One can argue for drinking it young for its fruit, but maybe it will come into focus with aging the way many 1997s did. 13% stated alcohol. Lot LNAU17BT. 87/B-

2017 Rully     1er Cru   Préaux
This is a fleshy wine with red fruits and some almond overtones. But it lacks the precision and liveliness I almost always find in Jacqueson’s wines. For me, this is a major disappointment from a producer I’m very fond of. Lot LPRE 17BT. 13% stated alcohol. 86/C

2017 Rully    1er Cru   Cloux
This wine is light and simple with indistinct red fruits. 13.5% stated alcohol. Lot LCLX17BT.  86/C

In white:

2017 Rully
This wine has mineral and hazelnut overtones in nose and mouth, a smooth and round texture, lightness on the palate, and outstanding finesse. It still needs a year or two in bottle to round out, so if you serve it now, I would suggest decanting ahead of time. In any case, be sure not to serve it too cold as that will unbalance the acidity. Lot LRUB17BT. 13% stated alcohol. 88+/B+

2017 Rully    1er Cru     Les Pucelles
This wine always reminds me of Puligny-Montrachet for its weightlessness, minerality, and silky texture. Light, pure, and precise, this is an outstanding white Burgundy, ready to drink now. Lot LPUC 17BT. 13% stated alcohol. 92/A
