Domaine Joliet: Fixin 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière

A recent article by Eric Asimov in the New York Times profiles Fixin’s Clos de la Perrière and its current owner, Bégnine Joliet. For much of the 19th century, Clos de la Perrière was one of the most highly-regarded vineyards in the Côte d’Or. That reputation did not continue into the twentieth century, but now Bénigne Joliet is attempting to recuperate that reputation. As Asimov observes, the wines are not of the level that they apparently were two hundred years ago, but they are worthy of note.

The vineyard is organically farmed, but the wine is not so certified.

2019 Fixin  1er Cru  Clos de la Perrière rouge

This wine is earthy, concentrated, deep, and fresh, with good energy. 100% whole cluster fermentation. 92/A

2018 Fixin  1er Cru  Clos de la Perrière rouge

The 2018 shows more weight and depth than its 2019 counterpart. The wine shows power and dark fruit. Good aging potential here. Again, 100% whole cluster fermentation. 92+/A

2019 Fixin  1er Cru  Clos de la Perrière blanc

The wine shows good richness and grip for the vintage. There’s just a touch of caramel, but rather than being a fault, it adds complexity. Good length. I’d drink this wine relatively young. 90/B+
