Domaine Jean-Marc et Hugues PAVELOT/Bourgogne Hugues PAVELOT (Savigny-les-Beaune) 2017 Tasted from Barrel Samples and Tank Samples

Hugues Pavelot said that he began harvest with the whites on 2-3 September. He characterized the yields as very good, but not over the limits. The resulting wines have good acidities. As usual here, all grapes were destemmed.  Some malo-lactic fermentations finished by the end of December, others took a little longer.

Wines from purchased grapes (for red) and musts (for white) are bottled under the Bourgogne Hugues Pavelot label and marked below with an asterisk (*).

Red wines:

2017 Bourgogne  Pinot Noir
Strawberry nose and mouth, medium weight, good length, round, nice complexity. This is from young vines because Pavelot had ripped out the former vines; normally 2016 would have been the first vintage, but the frost that year prevented that from happening. (86-88)

2017 Chorey-les-Beaune*
Floral and cherry nose. Medium-weight, nice acidity, cherry fruit. Pleasing. (86-89)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune
The wine has typical Savigny wild, mineral red fruits. The body is medium-light, easy in mouth, enjoyable without thinking too much. Large majority from the plain, but a little from slopes, too. (86-88)

2017 Aloxe-Corton
Floral nose. More weight, round, smooth, strawberry and other red berry fruit. Good length. Light on tongue. (86-89)

2017 Volnay*
Rounder, more voluptuous, red fruits with some dark hints. Light on tongue. (86-89)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune   1er Cru  Les Peuillets
Floral red and dark fruit nose, a bit of minerality. Red and dark fruits, roundness of Peuillets, some minerality, a little juiciness, light on tongue; enough grip to support aging, if desired. (88-90)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune   1er Cru   Les Serpentières
Herbal (positive) red fruits in nose and mouth, good energy and nervosity for the vintage, some black fruits in the mouth. More structure than previous wines. (89-91)

2017 Beaune  1er Cru  Bressandes
Round, rather full mouth, red fruits, good depth, not terribly complex for now. Some tannins in the back of the mouth. (89-91)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune   1er Cru   Les Guettes
Red currants and other red berries in nose and mouth, firmness in the mouth, good energy, some minerality.  (91-93)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune   1er  Les Gravains
Red cherries and other red fruits in nose and mouth, some minerality, good depth and structure. (91-93)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune   1er Cru  La Dominode
Depth to stony nose. Deep red fruits, hint of mint, most volume of these wines, good structure but also roundness, some smoothness. 40% is old vines — 80 years. (91-93)

Whites:

2017 Bourgogne*  Chardonnay
Good density, intensity, minerality to Chardonnay fruit. Entirely raised in tank. Musts came from the Mâconnais. (85-88)

2017 Chorey-les-Beaune   Clos Margot*
Floral nose. Nice acidity, finesse, some vanillins, apple fruit, good acidity. (87-90)

2017 Saint-Romain*
More minerality and weight in mouth, some power here. Less pretty than the Chorey, but more powerful. (87-89)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune
Mineral, stony nose that is typical of white Savigny. Lighter and more elegant in the mouth than the Saint-Romain; good minerality here, length, purity. (89-91)

2017 Pernand-Vergelesses*
Roundness. There is minerality here, but it is different, finer than in the Savigny. Ampleness without being heavy or cloying. Good differentiation of Savigny and Pernand terroirs for these two wines. (89-91)

2017 Corton
Mineral nose. Round, quite mineral, good energy. Not as big as a Corton-Charlemagne might be, but the energy makes up for it. Good firmness and penetration of the minerality. (92-94)
