Domaine Hubert LIGNIER (Morey-Saint-Denis) -- 2017 Tasted from Bottle, Tank, and Barrel

Quality here is excellent.

Laurent Lignier said that he began the harvest on 8 September in Côte de Nuits. Some whole clusters were used in the wines. Malo-lactic fermentations finished between January and June for the large majority, but the Pommard only finished during the harvest of 2018.

The wines here were in cask and not racked except as noted.

2017 Bourgogne-Aligoté
Round, smooth, mineral with outstanding precision — richness, smoothness, but also lightness.   (Bottled in spring; vineyard at the bottom of Morey-Saint-Denis)  88/A

2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir  Plant Gilbert
Racked 10 days prior to my tasting. 100% destemmed. Very pure red cherry fruit, balanced. The vines are by Chambolle-Musigny. (87-89)

2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir    Grand Chaillot
Intense red cherry fruit, good penetration. Long. 30% whole clusters here. (88-90)

2017 Pommard  En Brescul
This lieu-dit is located on Beaune side of Pommard, by the Saussilles vineyard. Lighnier has 40 ares and made 7 barrels in 2017. He bought the vineyard in 2014. As mentioned above, the malo-lactic fermentation was very late for this wine. Ripe blackberry fruit, round, medium-full, finesse of vintage over rusticity of Pommard.  (88-90)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny  Les Bussières
Red fruits, juicy, light, fresh, very attractive. 20% new wood, 20% whole clusters, various ages for the vines. The vineyard is on the border with Morey-Saint-Denis, by Roumier’s Morey-Clos de la Bussière and below Chambolle-Sentiers. (89-91)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny  vieilles vignes
This wine is from purchased grapes in the Les Gamères and Les Drazées lieux-dits. 20% new oak. Dark fruit (blackberry), intense, deep, good weight to this wine. Long. Good freshness and structure. 100% destemmed. (90-93)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin  La Justice
From purchased grapes. Laurent notes that the grapes here didn’t suffer too much from hydric stress in 2017 (the vineyard is not on the slopes). Stony nose, deep black fruits.  Dark fruits, broad, intense, a crowd-pleaser. (89-91)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin  Reniard
Tightly-wound, steely nose. Round, red cherry fruit, intense, deep. From purchased fruit, vineyard is below the route nationale, across from Etelois, which is above the route nationale. (90-92)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   Les Seuvrées
Medium-light, spicy, good definition to red fruits, broad but light; good, fine acidity. 25% whole clusters. (89-92)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis   Très Girard
Dark fruits, especially blackberry, mineral, medium-light, pure. From purchased fruit; first vintage was 2009. (89-91)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis    Trilogie
Three different vineyards from north, south, center of Morey (Chenevry, Clos Solon, and Porroux); vines are 50-80 years old. Blackberry fruit, spices, medium-weight, good structure. Long. (90-93)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis
Slightly sappy blackberry fruit, nice nervosity but also good breadth. (Younger vines — now about 40 years). (89-92)

2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges   Les Poisets
Some herbal notes in nose and mouth with blackberry fruit. More tannic than previous wines. Good acidity. Part whole cluster. Late malo (finished in June) — hasn’t yet come together. (88-91)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny   1er Cru  Les Chabiots
Very floral and tender — can see links to nearby Musigny and Amoureuses, but this is more tannic for the moment. Purchased grapes; 2010 was first vintage, but didn’t make 2016 because of frost. (90-93)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny   1er Cru   Les Baudes
At northern limit of Baudes, planted north-south. Pure, slightly sappy red and dark berry fruit. Good density and depth. 25% whole cluster. (92-94)

2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru  Les Didiers  (Hospices des Nuits — cuvée Jacques Duret)
Blackberry fruit, ripe, generous, but with enough structure, good depth. From wine purchased at the Hospices des Nuits and raised by Lignier. (93-95)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis   1er Cru  La Riotte
Medium-light, mineral red berry fruit, smooth, medium depth. Very attractive. (92-94)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru   Les Chaffots
Pure, crystalline red berry fruits in mouth, excellent clarity of definition, good acidity, light on palate, good freshness. (92-95)

2017 Morey-Saint-Denis   1er Cru   vieilles vignes
Slight herbal aspect to red fruits, deep, intense, nervy, light. From Faconnières and Cheneverny vineyards — mostly Faconnières. (93-95)

2017 Gevrey-Chambertin   1er Cru   Aux Combottes
Red cherry nose and mouth, broad, dense, smooth. (93-96)

2017 Griotte-Chambertin
Griotte cherry, medium-weight, finesse, long, pure — very Griotte. From purchased grapes, first vintage was in 2014. (94-96)

2017 Charmes-Chambertin
Pure, red fruit with a bit of Mazoyères gaminess. Mineral, deep, light, pure. Two barrels (600 bottles) in both 2017 and 2018. (94-96)

2017 Clos de la Roche
Pure, deep, dark, wild, intense, deep. Classic Clos de la Roche. Hail hit on 10 July, causing some losses. 8 barrels made. (95-98)
