Domaine FAIVELEY (Nuits-Saint-Georges) -- 2017 Part II: Grand Cru Red Wines Tasted from Barrel and Tank Samples

All the grands crus are exclusively in new barrels and one year-old barrels.

2017 Musigny
Dark, pure, dense, intense blackberry fruit; concentrated, long. Good tannic backbone. A complete wine, but needs 20 years (well, any Musigny worth its salt needs a minimum of 20 years to show its true greatness). The grapes from the plot Faiveley purchased from Dufouleur are included in this wine, so it will be less rare than before. 50% whole cluster. (95-98)

2017 Echézeaux   En Orveaux
Faiveley does well with Echézeaux, even tough the vines are not in a prime Echézeaux location. Oriental spice nose. Dark fruit, Echézeaux sensuality of texture, some spiciness, good freshness, precision. Nothing weak in structure, but drinks well already. About 50% new oak. No whole clusters in 2017, but there will be in 2018. (94-96)

2017 Clos-de-Vougeot
Red and black raspberry and blackberry fruit in the nose and mouth. Some sappiness, power, but approachable now, not a monster. In fact the wine has elegance. Tannins are round and there is good length here. All three Clos-de-Vougeot parcels that Faiveley owns are included in this wine. (92-95)

2017 Charmes-Chambertin
Dark fruits in nose and mouth. The wine is charming and approachable with good precision, nice minerality and plenty of freshness. Can approach early. From vines that Faiveley purchased from Dupont-Tisserandot. (93-95)

2017 Latricières-Chambertin
Good freshness, precision, length, and depth. The wine has both dark and red fruits and minerality. The coldness of terroir comes through in the minerality, precision, firmness of texture, and energy. (93-96)

2017 Mazis-Chambertin
Blend of Faiveley and Dupont-Tisserandot (about 20%) plots. Exotic fruits — kirsch, dark fruits, explosive, some wildness. Purity and precision. Should be superb.(94-96)

2017 Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze
Deep, complex nose with subtle mineral notes, slight hint of Clos-de-Bèze animality. Deep, pure, red fruits with minerality, ripeness, but also good structure from the coolness of the terroir. The fruit has good intensity. (95-97)

2017 Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze   Les Ouvrées Rodin
Perhaps slightly darker fruit in nose than in the other Clos-de-Bèze, plus chipped stone minerality. In the mouth, red fruits, depth, minerality, perhaps just a bit broader in the mouth with a bit more of old vine texture than in the previous wine. Good firmness here along with freshness, depth, and energy. (95-97)

2017 Corton  Clos des Cortons Faiveley
For the first time, Faiveley blended the three cuvées from diverse plots before they were put in barrels. Floral nose with mineral red fruits. Mouth is elegant for Corton with lightness on palate, red fruits, salinity, length, purity, and good energy. (94-96)
