Domaine DUJAC (Morey-Saint-Denis) -- 2018 Part II: Red Premier and Grand Cru Wines Tasted from Barrel

My introduction to the 2018 vintage at Dujac is here.

2018 Gevrey-Chambertin    1er Cru   Aux Combottes
Aux Combottes is surrounded on all sides by grand cru vineyards and has often been touted as a premier cru that deserves grand cru status. I once asked Jeremy Seysses whether he would like to see Combottes promoted to grand cru and he gave a most sensible response: better a top premier cru than a mediocre grand cru. But in 2018, there’s no doubt that the wine is of grand cru quality. Pure red cherry fruit in the nose. Mouth is dense, pure, mineral with red cherry fruit, smooth texture, and medium weight. Dujac’s plot is in the southwest corner of the vineyard, next to Clos de la Roche, on clay soils (part of the vineyard is on sandy soils).  (94-97)

2018 Charmes-Chambertin
Spicy red fruits, density, medium weight, some lightness on palate, intense, penetrating. Potentially, one of the finest Charmes-Chambertins I’ve ever had from Dujac, and I know them going back more than forty years. (94-96)

2018 Vosne-Romanée    1er Cru   Les Beaux Monts
Spicy red cherry fruit, juicy, quality tannins, finesse. (93-95)

2018 Echézeaux
Spicy red fruits nose and mouth, minerality, medium weight. (93-96)

2018 Vosne-Romanée     1er Cru     Aux Malconsorts
Structured, intense, pure red and dark fruits, especially dark plums. Quality tannins. (94-96)

2018 Clos de la Roche
Powerful nose, intense, pure, dark fruits, wild. Mouth shows finesse, red berries, purity, excellent length, some spice. A great Clos de la Rcohe. (96-98)

2018 Clos Saint-Denis
Vosne-like spices and red fruit aromas. Red fruit flavors, sensual texture, minerality length, smooth texture, some tannic underpinnings. My wine of the cellar on this visit, despite great competition. (97-99)

2018 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Gruenchers
Should have been presented earlier, but inadvertently skipped. Dark fruits, ripe, intense, mineral. More power here, less finesse than usual -- 14.1º alcohol. (92-94)

2018 Bonnes-Mares
Red and dark fruits, pure, dense, intense, quite a bit of structure, depth. Finesse here -- almost like Volnay Caillerets-like  layering of texture. Tremendous potential here. (95-98)
