Domaine DIGIOIA-ROYER (Chambolle-Musigny) -- 2017 Tasted from Bottle, Tank, and Barrel

Michel Royer said that he began harvesting on 9 September, 15 September for the Hautes Côtes de Nuits. All red wines were destemmed. Quantities were “normal" and overall a bit more than in 2018.

The malolactic fermentations generally finished in January through April, although the Bourgogne and Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits finished later.

The wines are good expressions for the vintage, offering pleasure for early and medium-term drinking while other vintages, such as 2015 and (what little there is of) 2016 mature in the cellars.

2017 Bourgogne-Aligoté
This wine is from Aligoté Doré vines, planted fairly recently near Gilly-Cîteaux and below Chambolle. The nose is stony and mineral with a touch of mint. The mouth is crisp with some roundness, a smooth texture, and medium weight overall. 86/B

2017 Bourgogne    Chardonnay
Yet another example of the fine quality of 2017 for the whites in Burgundy. This wine has mineral aromas. The mouth is medium weight with minerality and apple fruit and good purity.  (87-89)

2017 Bourgogne   rosé
This is a charming wine with minerality, strawberry fruit, and lightness overall. Nothing serious, but lovely for a spring or summer day. Made from press wine. 87/A

2017 Bourgogne   Pinot Noir
The Bourgogne  Pinot Noir has concentrated cassis and other dark fruits, and it is pure and fresh with excellent structure. Because of the structure, this wine is more like 2016 in overall style than 2017, but it can be drunk with pleasure now. (87-89)

2017 Bourgogne-Hautes Côtes de Nuits    Pinot Noir
Here, the wine shows excellent depth and freshness for its appellation with structure, cassis fruit, and good acidity. (86-89)

2017 Savigny-les-Beaune    Dessus les Vermots
This wine has dark berry fruit, a medium-weight body, finesse, freshness, elegance, and good weight. (88-90)

2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges      Les Charmois
The Nuits, Charmois is pure with red berry fruits and lightness in the mouth, and a smooth texture. It’s an easy wine to approach and has a pleasing bitterness on the finish that should work well with food. (89-91)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny
The Chambolle has fresh cassis and red berry fruit with good energy, freshness, and length. (89-92)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny    vieilles vignes
From the outstanding Fremières vineyard, this wine has more depth and energy to its dark fruits, and is a bit more tannic than the regular village Chambolle. There’s good grip here, too. (90-92)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Gruenchers
The Chambolle-Gruenchers has iodide aromas. The mouth shows elegance and purity to its dark and red fruits, good grip, and some juiciness. The vines are now 32 years-old. (90-93)

2017 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Groseilles
Last, the Chambolle-Groseilles displays more finesse than the Gruenchers, but there’s still very good concentration. The wine is long and sensual in the mouth with excellent cassis and red fruits. (91-94)
