Domaine des Comtes LAFON (Meursault) 2015 from Tank and Barrel -- Part II: Whites

(Originally published in 13 April 2017.)

Dominique Lafon began harvesting the whites on 27 August. As you can see below, malolactic fermentations were quite slow for some wines, and some placed in stainless steel to finish their malos before being returned to barrel.

These are some of the best 2015 whites that I have encountered.

2015 Meursault
The nose here is typical Meursault butteriness. The butter continues in the medium-weight body with some creaminess. The wine is lively and energetic and has some citric overtones. (89-92)

2015 Meursault    Clos de la Barre
The Clos de la Barre shows more finesse and complexity in the nose than the straight Meursault, and there are butter hints here. The mouth shows butter and peach with more concentration than the Meursault and good tension. (90-93)

2015 Meursault   Désirée
The Meursault, Désirée shows butter in the nose. The mouth is nervy, pure, and stony with good energy. This wine was very slow in its malolactic fermentation — it was put in stainless steel to finish its malo and then returned to barrel. (89-93)

2015 Meursault     1er Cru    Bouchères
Lafon’s Bouchères has flinty aromas. The mouth is energetic but stony, austere, and steely — very different from what I typically think of as Bouchères but very interesting. (90-94)

2015 Meursault     1er Cru   La Goutte d’Or
This wine, too, was very late in its malolactic fermentation — finishing only in late October. As a result, it was difficult to get specifics on it, but there’s plenty of tension and energy here. Typically this is a wine that needs time in bottle to come around. (90-94)

2015 Meursault    1er Cru    Les Porouzots
This is simply smashing Porouzots. From tank (only 3/4 malo finished), the wine is stony and shows tension. I can’t say more because of the malo remaining to be finished. (92-96)

2015 Meursault     1er Cru    Genevrières
Lafon's Genevrières has the typical nose, recalling junipers and with great finesse. The mouth is powerful for a Genevrières, with length, density, finesse, and nectarine fruit. The wine is still quite young and needs further time in cask. (92-96)

2015 Meursault    1er Cru    Charmes
The Charmes is intense and deep with good energy and (surprisingly) more finesse than the Genevrières. (92-96)

2015 Meursault    1er Cru    Perrières
In general, 2015 may not be a great year for Perrières, but that’s not the case chez Lafon. The wine has salinity, tension, depth, and precision with great complexity. (94-97)

2015 Montrachet
This is great Montrachet by any standard. The wine is very young, still, but very impressive. It is round and has great depth. (95-98)
