Domaine de Montille, 2022 Reds Part I: Bourgogne, Monthélie, Beaune, and Volnay

Brian Sieve, chef de cave at Domaine de Montille, said that 2018, 2020, and 2022 were the warmest vintages ever. Of the three, 2022 produced the most fruit. Alcohols are about 12.8º, with only two wines in the estate being above 13º. Harvesting in 2022 started about 24 August. Production levels were generous.

The estate began adopting organic practices in 1985, and by 1995 had totally abandoned synthetic fertilizers, fungicides, and insecticides. In the 2000s, the estate began to adopt biodynamic processes.

2022 Bourgogne

Blueberries in the nose and mouth, this wine is medium-weight, round, sensuous, and shows good length.  (89-91)

2022 Monthélie

This wine is made without any addition of SO2, a practice started in 2014, and it has become a darling of the natural wine community. It comes from hard limestone soils and all grapes are destemmed. The wine is pure and focused with strawberry and red cherry fruit and plenty of charm. (89-91)

2022 Beaune   1er Cru   Les Sizies

The Beaune-Sizies has dark fruit that is pure and penetrating. The wine is quite rich and lacks some refinement, perhaps a quality inherent in Sizies. The vines are about 35 years-old and there is 1/3 whole clusters, 20% new oak on this wine. (88-91)

2022 Beaune   1er Cru   Grèves

The Beaune-Grèves is ripe and pure with more class and finesse than the Sizies. Dark fruits predominate here. About half whole clusters, 25-30% new oak. (90-93)

2022 Volnay   1er Cru   Champans

The Volnay-Champans features dark fruits, good acidity, energy, and freshness. About half whole clusters, 25-30% new oak. (91-94)

2022 Volnay   1er Cru   Mitans

The Volnay-Mitans has bright, lively dark fruits, lightness on the palate and also firmness with restrained juiciness. The wine shows the terroir very well. 100% whole clusters. (92-95)

2022 Volnay   1er Cru  Taillepieds

As good as the preceding wines are, it’s a big step up to the fabulous Taillepieds. The wine is complex with dark fruits and salinity. The texture is sculpted, as is typical of Taillepieds, and the wine is both intense and harmonious. The vines average 75 years of age. About 2/3 whole clusters.  (95-97)
