Domaine David DUBAND/François FEUILLET (Chavigny) -- 2016 Part I: Regional, Village, and Premiers Crus Tasted from Barrel

(Originally published 23 February 2018)

David Duband said that overall, he lost about 40% of a normal production in 2016; Morey was ok, there were some losses in Gevrey, and heavy losses in Nuits and Chambolle.

Harvesting began on 25 September. There was no triage. Generally, the wines in Chambolle were composed 80% of whole clusters, for Gevrey it was 95-100%. Malolactic fermentations finished over the winter. New oak is 30% for the Hautes Côtes de Nuits and village wines, 40% for the premiers and grands crus.

These wines are in a style of great finesse — some may find them too light, but I appreciate them for their purity and overall harmony.

You may also find some of these wines under the François Feuillet label; Feuillet is a financial backer of Duband.

2016 Bourgogne-Hautes-Côtes de Nuits   Cuvée Louis-Auguste  Pinot Noir
This wine shows dark fruits that are spicy and pure, and there is good energy here. 60% whole clusters. (88-91)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny
Here there is spicy dark plum fruit, finesse, and good concentration — a classic village Chambolle. 60% whole clusters. (88-92)

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin
The Gevrey has strawberry and dark fruits, more energy and substance than the Chambolle, good nervosity, and good concentration for Duband’s very elegant style. (89-92)

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges
Duband’s village Nuits has dark and red fruits, depth, power but also finesse, Nuits rusticity, and minerality. (89-92)

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis   1er Cru   Clos Sorbè
The Clos Sorbè features strawberry and red currant fruit, finesse, length, and chalkiness. (91-94)

2016 Chambolle-Musigny    1er Cru   Les Sentiers
The Chambolle-Sentiers has red fruits, especially strawberries, with good depth and energy. Frost damage here was less than for much of Chambolle: Duband produced nine barrels in 2016, 13 in 2017. (89-93)

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru   Aux Thorey
The Nuits-Thorey features dark plums and spice with purity, depth, and freshness. (92-95)

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges    1er Cru   Les Pruliers
Duband’s Nuits-Pruliers is dark, intense, and pure with good energy, finesse, and minerality. The production contrast with the Sentiers is striking: two barrels of Pruliers in 2016, 12 in 2017. (91-95)

2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges   1er Cru   Les Procès
The Nuits-Procès has red currant fruit, minerality, good intensity, and freshness. (92-95)
David Duband said that overall, he lost about 40% of a normal production in 2016; Morey was ok, there were some losses in Gevrey, and heavy losses in Nuits and Chambolle.
