Domaine Marc ROY (Gevrey-Chambertin) -- 2016 Tasted from Bottle

(Originally published November 2017)

Alexandrine Roy continues to turn out top-level wines from her village vineyards.

Harvesting in 2016 began here on 23 September. As always, the grapes were entirely destemmed. The red wines are raised half in new oak, half in one year-old barrels. Bottling, always early here, took place in August, just prior to the 2017 harvest.

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin    vieilles vignes
This wine has fresh, mineral red fruit aromas. The mouth is medium-weight and smooth with fresh red and black berry fruit and good length. 92/A

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin   La Justice
The nose features gamy dark fruits. The mouth is energetic with dark fruits in a medium-weight body. There’s nice tension to the wine and good layering of the fruit. 92/A

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin    Clos Prieur
This wine is from the village portion of the Clos Prieur vineyard that is just below the premier cru portion. The nose is spice, and the mouth shows dark plums and spices. There’s a bit of sappiness here and also a satiny texture. Clos Prieur at its best is a stylistic continuation of Mazis-Chambertin upslope, and this wine fills the bill. 92+/A

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin    Cuvée Alexandrine
Only three barrels (900 bottles) of this wine were made; it is Alexandrine’s selection of the most “millerandé" grape bunches (that is, those with the most shot berries, which yield much higher solid-to-juice ratios). There’s some wood or reduction in the nose, expressing itself for now as coffee, but it will burn off with time. The mouth is firm with old-vine sappiness to the dark fruits, and great density to the fruit, but still with finesse and good minerality.  92+/A

2016 Marsannay  Champs Pedrix  blanc
For this wine, 20% new oak. The wine does not go through malolactic fermentation. The nose has mineral and lime aromas with a hint of peach. The mouth has mineral and lime flavors and is firm with a very slight creaminess to it. 89/A-
