2021 Saar (Mosel) Riesling GG Part II: Altenberg, Bockstein,Saarsfeiler from von Hövel, van Volxem, Vereinigte Hospiten, and Nik Weis-St Urbanshof

As with the previous group, the strength of Saar wines is apparent, but also inexplicable disappointment.

VON HÖVEL

2021 (Kanzem) Hörecker Riesling GG  (auction wine)

This wine is one of the curious disappointments I mentioned in the previous post. Lacking a little grip and depth, not showing much fruit, either. 89?/B

2021 (Obermmel) Hütte Riesling GG

Floral, perfumed nose. Medium-light, concentrated, lime rind fruit, pure, intense, penetrating. 94/A

VAN VOLXEM

2021 (Kanzem) Altenberg Riesling GG

Orange and lemon blossom nose. Light body, smooth, easy to approach now, elegant, stony white fruits. 93/A

2021 (Ockfen) Bockstein Riesling GG

Stony nose. White peach fruit, medium-weight body, good concentration. Round acids, approachable already. 93(+)/A

VEREINIGTE HOSPITEN

2021 (Kanzem) Altenberg Riesling GG

A bit soft on mid-palate, not much penetration. 88?/B-

Nik WEIS — ST. URBANSHOF

Nik Weis has long been an outstanding producer, but as you see here and will see with other GG’s that I’ll review, his 2021s are exceptional, among the finest in the Saar, the whole Mosel, and indeed in the elite category in all of Germany.

2021 (Schoden) Saarfeilser Riesling GG

Stony, pure Saar nose. Light body, white peach fruit, excellent depth, completeness. 93+/A

2021 (Ockfen) Bockstein Riesling GG

Stony, intense, pure, citric, white peach, lively, penetrating, saline, celery seed — just wow! 95/A+
