2021 Saar (Mosel) Riesling GG Part I: Feils, Kupp, Lambertskirch, Schonfels from Lauer and Van Volxem

The Saar is full of great wines in 2021, but for reasons I am currently unable to explain, there are also some disappointments.

Peter LAUER

2021 (Schoden) Feils Riesling GG

Stony, round, structured, yet some sensuality. Light on palate. Ultimately, not quite the depth of still better wines. 92/A

2021 (Ayl) Kupp Riesling GG

Light, stony, some acidic backbone, but ultimately doesn’t have the intensity or concentration of the better wines of this vintage. 88/B

2021 (Ayl) Lambertskirch Riesling GG (auction wine)

Roundness, power, medium-weight, intense. 93/A

2021 (Ayl) Schonfels Riesling GG

Lauer sternness, some iron, minerality, lightness in mouth, good acidic backbone. 92+/A

VAN VOLXEM

2021 (Ayl) Schonfels Riesling GG

Round, pure, yellow fruit, long, smooth. 92+/A
