2021 Mosel Riesling GG Part III: Juffer, Juffer-Sonnenuhr, Niederberg-Helden, and Paulinshofberg from Fritz Haag and Schloss Lieser-Thomas Haag

The late Wilhelm Haag’s sons Olivier and Thomas face off in a comparison of their outstanding wines.

Fritz HAAG

2021 (Brauneberg) Juffer Riesling GG

Stony, round, wiry, good concentration and tension. 93/A

2021 (Brauneberg) Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling GG

As is typical, a bit more incisive, a bit more energetic than the Juffer, knife-sharp acidity, penetration, green apple fruit. 94/A

2021 (Kesten) Paulinshofberg Riesling GG

Floral aromas. In mouth, light in weight, good acidity, steely, wiry. 91+/A-

SCHLOSS LIESER — Thomas HAAG

2021 (Brauneberg) Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling GG

A bit richer and deeper than the Fritz Haag version, but with plenty of energy and clarity. Acidity is less sharp but excellent; green apple peel flavors. 94/A

2021 (Lieser) Niederberg-Helden Riesling GG

Not as nervy as the Juffer-Sonnenuhr, good depth, density, but more closed for now. 92+/A
