2021 and 2020 Rheingau Riesling GG Part I: Schlenzenberg and Wisselbrunnen from Barth, Diefenhardt, August Eser, Kaufmann, Georg Müller Stiftung, and Josef Spreitzer

In contrast to the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer, where all the GG’s shown were 2021, an increasing number of Rheingau producers are holding their wines back for an extra year of aging, and so many of the new-release GG’s are from 2020.

BARTH

2020 (Hattenheim) Wisselbrunnen Riesling GG

Mineral, perfumed nose and mouth, a bit of lavender, good tightness of structure, freshness. 92+/A

DIFENHARDT

2020 (Martinsthal) Schlenzenberg Riesling GG

Mineral, citrus blossom nose. Medium-light body, minerality, purity, good depth. Still rather closed. 92+/A

August ESER

2020 (Hattenheim) Wisselbrunnen Riesling GG

Pear blossom nose — fragrant and powerful. Clear, round, pear and quince flavors, good acidic structure. 92/A

KAUFMANN

2020 (Hattenheim) Wisselbrunnen Riesling GG

Medium-weight, fresh, not showing a lot of precision at the moment, but pleasant. 90(+)/B+

Georg MÜLLER Stiftung

2020 (Hattenheim) Wisselbrunnen Riesling GG

Round, a bit dusty, a little austerity for now, but green fruits are beginning to peak out. Good structure. 90+/B+

Josef SPREITZER

2021 (Hattenthim) Wisselbrunnen Riesling GG

Floral nose. Round, sensuous, white fruits, good length, medium-weight, ample. 93/A
