Continuing to move north in the Pfalz, the wines remain outstanding, but only with the Müller-Catoir Im Brümmel and the Minges Schäwer did I begin to see hints of the greatness to come from the vineyards further north in the Pfalz.
A. CHRISTMANN
2020 (Gimmeldingen) Meerspinne Riesling GG
Christmann finesse with depth. Incipient white peach supported by acidity, but fairly austere for the moment. 92/A
2020 (Königsbach) Idig Riesling GG
Mineral, intense, still rather closed, but peach fruit is showing. Good depth and some nervosity. 92+/A
2020 (Königsberg) Ölberg-Hart Riesling GG
Steely, crisp, still rather austere, but good nervosity and depth. Very promising. 92+/A
2020 (Neustadt) Vogelsang Riesling GG
Quince nose. Crisp mouth with plenty of acidity; but austere for the moment. 91(+?)/A-
Theo MINGES
2020 (Gleisweiler) Hölle Riesling GG
Sandstone and limestone soils here, smooth, apple and peach flavors. Very good, but lacks the depth and energy of the Schäwer. 92/A
2020 (Burrweiler) Schäwer Riesling GG
Slate minerality and peach nose and mouth. Very open and inviting. Medium-weight, intense, long. 94/A
MÜLLER-CATOIR
2020 (Haardt) Bürgergarten “Im Breumel” Riesling GG
Floral, perfumed nose. Medium-full, power but elegance (iron fist in velvet glove), deep apple and peach fruit. 94/A
Ökonomierat REBHOLZ
2020 (Burrweiler) Schäwer Riesling GG
A new vineyard for Rebholz, one that is unusual for the Pfalz because it has slate soils. Incipient yellow peach and nectarine, lively acidity, medium-weight, long. But less slate-driven and not as tight and complete as the Minges. 92+/A
