2020 Pfalz Grosses Gewächs Riesling Part I (Ganzhorn, Kalmit, Kastanienbusch, Kirchberg, Köppel, Sonnenberg, Im Sonnenschein from Bernhart, Kranz, Rebholz, Siegrist, Wehrheim)

Very good results from these producers, but usually they produce some of the top GG’s of the vintage for me; not this year.

BERNHART

2020 (Schweigen) Sonnenberg Riesling GG

Dense, intense, powerful with ripe apricot and nectarine fruit, excellent depth. 92+/A

KRANZ

2020 (Ilbesheim) Kalmit Riesling GG

Medium-light body, fruity, elegant, fruit not well-defined at this time. 90/B+

2020 (Ilbesheim) Kirchberg Riesling GG

Medium-weight, more dense than the Kalmit. Citric flavors, more notable acidity. 91/A-

Ökonomierat REBHOLZ

2020 (Birkweiler) Kastanienbusch Riesling GG

Mineral, austere, deep, citric, energetic. 93/A

2020 (Siebeldingen) Im Sonnenschein Riesling GG

Intense, pure, deep, mineral, overall balance. A typical Rebholz — needs time. 93+/A

2020 (Siebeldingen) Im Sonnenschein “Ganzhorn” Riesling GG

A little rounder, smoother in texture than the Im Sonnenschein, less expressive of fruit at this time, but promise. 92+/A

SIEGRIST

2020 (Leinsweiler) Sonnenberg Riesling GG

Medium-light body, gentle acidity, lemony fruit, overall elegance. 91/A-

Dr. WEHRHEIM

2020 (Birkweiler) Kastanienbusch Riesling GG

As usual, easier to approach, more open at this stage than the Rebholz Kastanienbusch. Good intensity, gentle acidity, lemon blossom fruit. 93/A

2020 (Birkweiler) Kastanienbusch “Köppel" Riesling GG

Earthier nose. Depth, intensity, crispness, energetic, incipient peach. 93+/A
