Two winners and two losers.

BATTENFELD-SPANIER

2020 (Hohen-Sülzen) Kirchenstück Spätburgunder GG

Pure, clear, nervy, red currants and some strawberries, good penetration. 91/A-

GUTZLER

Gutzler has a reputation for Spätburgunder, but my experience over the years has been most uneven. Neither of these is an inspiring Grosses Gewächs.

2019 (Westhofen) Brunnenhäuschen Spätburgunder GG

Oak, geranium nose — my understanding is that geranium indicates an excess addition of sorbic acid. Medium-light weight, better concentration, dark fruits, but still tannic. 70/F

2019 (Westhofen) Morstein Spätburgunder GG

Meaty nose — brett? Medium-weight, somewhat dilute dark fruits, lacking a bit of precision. 80-?/F

KELLER

2020 (Nieder-Flörsheim) Frauenberg Spätburgunder GG

Pure, clear, well-defined red currant and strawberry fruit, good depth and energy. Drinks well now and should continue to improve. 91/A-
