Moving to the central part of the Pfalz, some producers whom I normally like were somewhat disappointing in their 2019 offerings. Perhaps the wines have begun to close? Or perhaps its the character of the vintage here.

BERGDOLT - KLOSTERGUT ST. LAMPRECHT

2020 (Duttweiler) Kalkberg Spätburgunder GG

Medium-light in weight, good purity, red fruits, good length in mouth, penetration. 91/A-

A. CHRISTMANN

2020 (Königsbach) Idig Spätburgunder GG

Intense dark fruits, medium-weight, round, some power, lacks perhaps a touch of precision and penetration of still better wines. 90/B+

Theo MINGES

2019 (Böchingen) Rosenkranz - Zinkelerde Spätburgunder GG

Medium-weight with some firmness, red fruits, lacking just a bit of generosity. Some tannin on finish. 87+/C

MUNZBERG - Gunter KESSLER

2019 (Godramstein) Munzberg Schlangenpfiff Spätburgunder GG

Caramel notes in nose that blow off, at least partly. Medium-weight body with red fruits, a little dustiness, a little austerity. 88(?)/B-

Dr. WEHRHEIM

2019 (Birkweiler) Kastanienbusch Köppel Spätburgunder GG

Medium-weight, some firmness, mostly red fruits, tannins are present but not obtrusive, some drive. 88(+)/B-
