2020 and 2019 Franken Grosses Gewächs Silvaner Part I (Himmelpfad, Hoheleite, Kallmuth, Rothlauf, Stein-Berg, Stein-Harfe from Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist, Juliusspital, Löwenstein, May, Stattliche Hofkeller Würzburg, Weltner)

Based on my sampling of 2019 and 2020 Silvaner GG at the Wiesbaden Preview, while there were good wines made in both vintages, the acidities are too relaxed to permit Franken Silvaner to show its true greatness in either vintage.

BÜRGERSPITAL ZUM HEILIGEN GEIST

2020 (Würzburg) Stein-Harfe Silvaner GG

Mineral, golden apple nose. Moderate acidity, some richness on palate, a bit of a burn (alcohol?), good length. 90/B+

JULUISSPITAL WÜRZBURG

2019 (Würzburg) Stein-Berg Silvaner GG

Minerality with more acidity than the Staatliche Hofkeller Stein-Berg (different vintage), but precision is lacking here. 88/B-

Fürst LÖWENSTEIN

2019 (Homburg) Kallmuth Silvaner GG

Minerality in nose; pure on palate with minerality, rainwater clarity, good acidity. 92/A

Rudolf MAY

2020 (Retzstadt) Himmelpfad Silvaner GG

Quince nose, decent acidity, clarity, precision. 91/A-

2020 (Thüngersheim) Rothlauf Silvaner GG

Pear and peach fruit, decent acidity, clarity. 90/B+

STAATLICHE HOFKELLER WÜRZBURG

2020 (Würzburg) Stein-Berg Silvaner GG

Minerality with moderate acidity and some burn. Drink young. 88/B-

Paul WELTNER

2020 (Rödelsee) Hoheleite Silvaner GG

Pure, mineral nose. Medium-weight, moderate acidity, excellent clarity, some minerality. 91/A-
