This is a region where I’ve rarely producers making wines that I could appreciate. That appears to be especially the case in 2020. Given the catastrophic losses of so many producers in 2021 as a result of the floods, I hesitated to post my notes on Ahr wines, but finally decided that if they were willing to label them as GG and show them, consumers were entitled to my views on the wines.

2020 (Walporzheim) Alte Lay Spätburgunder GG 

Fragrant, floral nose. Smooth, elegant, medium-weight, creamy texture, dark fruits. 87(+)/C




BURGGARTEN


2020 (Walporzheim) Kräuterberg Spätburgunder GG 

Indistinct nose. Medium-weight, dense, dark fruits, bitter. 82/F


2020 (Walporzheim) Alte Lay Spätburgunder GG 

Strong toast nose. Creamy texture but dark fruit seems somewhat dilute. 84/F




DEUTZERHOF


2020 (Altenahr) Eck Spätburgunder GG

Spicy, floral nose, touch of geranium. Medium-light weight, some elegance, red fruits, not tannic. Elegant. 86/D


2020 (Mayschoss) Mönchberg Spätburgunder GG

Spicy dark fruit nose, some oak, but it is not overly dominant.  Medium-light body, dense, some tannin, dark fruits, needs time to form. 87(+)/C
