2018, 2017, 2016 Pfalz Grosses Gewächs Spätburgunder Part 3 (Heydenreich, Im Sonnenschein, Kalmit, Kastanienbusch, KB, Münzberg, Rosenkranz, Sankt Paul, Sonnnenberg from Becker, Kranz, Minges, Münzberg-Kessler, Rebholz, Siegrist, Wehrheim)

These producers at the southern end of the Pfalz release their Pinot Noirs a little later than most of those further north.

Friedrich BECKER

2018 (Schweigen) Heydenreich Spätburgunder GG

Pure precise cassis nose — but for brett-phobes there is a hint of meatiness. In the mouth, medium-light, pure, deep, but again, some meatiness. 90?/B+

2018 (Schweigen) KB Spätburgunder GG

Dense, concentrated, a bit gritty, lots of depth. This wine hasn’t come together: it has great potential, and yet I have some doubts that it will ever be harmonious. 90+?/B+

2018 (Schweigen) Sankt Paul Spätburgunder GG

Floral dark fruit nose. In the mouth, depth, purity, concentration to dark fruits. Give it 8-10 years. 91(+)/A-

KRANZ

2018 (Ilbesheim) Kalmit Spätburgunder GG

Dense, deep, concentrated cassis. This wine needs 12-20 years to fully resolve, but the material is impressive now. 91/A-

Theo MINGES

2018 (Böchingen) Rosenkranz-Zinkelerde Spätburgunder GG

Floral nose. Red currants, strawberries, raspberries, good depth. Needs 2-3 years to reach its peak. 90/B+

MÜNZBERG - Gunter KESSLER

2018 (Godramstein) Münzberg “Schlangenpfiff" Spätburgunder GG

Dark fruits, depth, some nervosity, penetration. Medium-light body. 90(+)/B+

Ökonomierat REBHOLZ

2016 (Siebeldingen) Im Sonnenschein Spätburgunder GG

Cassis fruit, round, chewy; a bit rustic, but pleasing. Good depth. 89/B

SIEGRIST

2017(Leinsweiler) Sonnenberg Spätburgunder GG

Intense, deep, concentrated, with unformed, slightly rustic fruit — this wine needs time but has promise. 89+/B

Dr. WEHRHEIM

2018 (Birkweiler) Kastanienbusch “Köppel” Spätburgunder GG

Intense, mineral, dark fruits, still unformed. Power here but not rustic. 88+/B
