Strong wines from Baden in this vintage.

BERCHER

2017 (Burkheim) Feuerberg Kesselberg Spätburgunder GG
Medium-light, pure, linear, red cherry, firm. 90(+)/A-

Staatsweingut FREIBURG

2017 (Blankenhornsberg) Doktorgarten Spätburgunder GG
Nervous, floral nose — cherry blossoms. Light, pure red cherry with some tannin on finish. 90/A-

Bernhard HUBER

In my experience, Huber along with Rudolf Fürst are the two greatest Pinot Noir estates in Germany. It is most gratifying to see that in the wake of Bernhard’s untimely death, his wife and son are continuing the quality. The estate has the most immaculate vineyards I’ve ever seen.

2017 (Malterdingen) Bienenberg Spätburgunder GG
Spiced, glazed red fruits nose. Medium-weight, clear, almost crystalline, ripe, but not overripe, very long in mouth, red fruits. 92(+)/A

2017 (Malterdingen) Bienenberg Wildenstein Spätburgunder GG
Clear, almost crystalline dark berry fruit, firmness, medium-weight, very long in mouth. 92+/A

2017 (Hecklingen) Schlossberg Spätburgunder GG
Cinnamon spice nose — elegant and deep. Medium-light, intense, penetrating, crystalline dark berry fruit. Very long in mouth. 93/A

2017 (Bombach) Sommerhalde Spätburgunder GG
Cherry blossom nose, scented. Light, elegant, red cherry floral fruit, very elegant, excellent clarity, almost crystallinity. Very long in mouth. 93/A

SEEGER

2017 (Leimen) Herrenberg Oberklamm Spätburgunder GG
Oak in nose. Medium-weight, slight oak, red fruit is there but oak is crowding it out. 87?/B-

2017 (Leimen) Herrenberg Sperman Spätburgunder GG
Some oak in nose, but less than in previous wine. Medium-light, firm, red berries. 89/B+

WÖHRLE

2017 (Lahr) Kirchgasse Spätburgunder GG
Some reduction, floral in nose. Medium weight, firm, red cherry fruit, nice energy. 89+/B+
