2017 and 2018 Pfalz Grosses Gewächs Spätburgunder Part I (Im Grossen Garten, Kirschgarten, Mandelpfad, Steinbuckel from Knipser, Kuhn)

From the area not far from Battenfeld-Spanier in the Rheinhessen, more good Spätburgunder.

KNIPSER

2017 (Grosskarlbach) Im Grossen Garten Spätburgunder GG

Spice, depth, power, dark fruits; a touch rustic for the moment but should come together to be a beautiful wine at 10-15 years’ age. 92/A

2017 (Laumersheim) Kirschgarten Spätburgunder GG

Good energy and depth to spicy dark (especially blackberry) fruits, still a little tannic, but depth and completeness are evident. 91/A-

2017 (Dirmstein) Mandelpfad Spätburgunder GG

Floral nose with some spice. Dark fruits, depth, intensity, needs some time to come fully together. Some oak showing, but should resolve in time. 90+/B+

Philipp KUHN

2018 (Laumersheim) Kirschgarten Spätburgunder GG

Spiced dark fruits nose, especially blackberries. Dense, tannic, but good depth. With 10-15 years. 90(+)/B+

2018 (Laumersheim) Steinbuckel Spätburgunder GG

Spiced red and dark fruit nose. Medium-weight, dark fruits, good depth, some tannin. The wine needs 8-10 years’ cellaring but is promising. 91(+)/A-
